They weren't his own people. They were predominantly Kurds, a racial minority that he loathed... Which is why he did it.

Believe it or not, A LOT of people actually were happy under Saddam, because they were secularist Arabs of Sunni decent, an often persecuted minority in other parts of the mid East.
Iraq was a modern country, it was relatively secular, and it was doing ok so long as you were NOT a religious shiite or a Kurd.

That's why people are "unhappy" and "ungrateful". Basically anyone in Baghdad has had their lives ruined by the "liberation" effort.
Not only do they have to deal with massive social change, they also have to do it with ruined infrastructure and newly rampant crime and terrorism.

I'm not making any apologies for Saddam or the Baath party.
I'm pointing out that there are a lot of people who have what they think is a legitimate reason to be pissed off at the US.

Everyone must love the depleted Uranium all over Iraq. That stuff is so much better than anything Saddam ever used. I guess we should be glad Rumsfeld didn't sell any of that to him like he did everything else so he could use it himself. Even our soldiers were exposed to it. All of those deformed kids that will be born from contamination and the ones who were maimed by the bombs will surely be grateful. They're free after all.

While I don't suggest looking at this while eating I do suggest you look at it so you get a full understanding how much these kids and their parents are appreciating it. Some of these babies are our soldiers.
