One thing most people don't realize is that Hispanics here legally are aware of this type of thing, and are actually AGAINST allowing illegal immigration to continue.

The only people FOR allowing illegal immigration to continue are small business employers, politicians, the illegals themselves, and religious whackjobs and their CHURCHES.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (42 U.S.C. § 1395dd, EMTALA) is a United States Act of Congress passed in 1986 as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. It requires hospitals and ambulance services to provide care to anyone needing emergency healthcare treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. There are no reimbursement provisions. As a result of the act, patients needing emergency treatment can be discharged only under their own informed consent or when their condition requires transfer to a hospital better equipped to administer the treatment.


The reason for EMTALA is simple; it WAS a common practice to deny care.

Here's the deal. If a hospital accepts Medicare or Medicaid then they must abide EMTALA.

The logical way to abolish EMTALA would be to abolish Medicare/Medicaid.

Answer this simple question, everyone. If you are found unconscious and bleeding to death, to you want the ambulance and hospital to verify your insurance and ability to pay first?

Now, this was passed in 1986. And not likely to be dropped.

Here is something else you may want to see...

According to the Census Bureau, some 9.7 million of the nation's 45.7 million uninsured people in 2007 were non-citizens. Access by illegal immigrants to U.S. health care through EMTALA remains a source of controversy.

The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 contains a provision for $250 million per year for fiscal years 2005-2008 in payments to eligible providers for emergency health services provided to undocumented aliens and other specified aliens.

This, what I have described above, is not conjecture. It is Law. Law enacted by the Congress(es) and signed by the President(s) of the US.

You forgot to mention that "Joe Illegal" is also sending that under-the-table money back to Mexico... I don't have a problem with money leaving the States, I send a lot myself to my Family in the PI, but the money I'm sending is AFTER taxes.

I have to call BS on this one - regardless if it is the law or not. My wife needed emergency care last year (dislocated hip). Guess what? They actually REFUSED to do anything until I got there and paid. Oh, but it gets better.

They relocated her hip and during x-rays they RE-DISLOCATED IT. Of course, they refused to do anything until AFTER I paid YET ANOTHER deductible.

If it is (was) a primary care or urgent care (which are mostly privately owned) or a private hospital (they still exist) then they may be exempt.

Otherwise, if they fall into the category as I mentioned above then yes - it is BS if this occured.

If this bothers you this much (and it should), I would document everything and contact your local representative and congress person. Hospitals are NOT above the law.

But do get your facts all in a row and make sure that this hospital is supposed to abide by the law.

One of the most effective way to get answers is to contact a local TV station and ask if they would look into this - Local Hospital Refuses To Offer Care Until Paid in Advance.

No one likes bad press.

If everything falls into place, the hospital would have to do some serious "damage control" and, yes, you may end up getting "comped".

The problem is the Catholic Church... nearly all illegals are Catholic, and it is not unusual to see families of illegals with 6, 8 or even 10 children. The Catholic church doesn't care about people, it cares about money and number of "followers", so it is STILL to this day telling followers not use contraception, especially condoms. They have even said bluntly that men with AIDS should continue to have unprotected sex with their spouse -- so much for being "pro life", eh?

So, the illegal's untaxed money goes to several places:

1) sent back to Mexico to help support HUGE extended families

2) Smuggling fees ($1,500 - $5,000) per trip, and most illegals I talk to go home at least once per year.

3) Fraud - They are often victims of financial fraud on BOTH sides of the border, but can't report it on either side. Even the smugglers they pay often just don't show up after being paid to smuggle them.

Americans want to stop illegal immigration not only because it's bad for America, but it's bad for the Illegals as well. They are treated like slaves here and are often victims of crime because they are easy targets.

Third, a lot of illegals do pay taxes and buy health insurance, and even buy homes.

Fourth, where the hell did you get this idea that illegals get anything subsidized? If you don't have a social, you cant get medicare, foodstamps, or rent credit.



What I think it comes down to is the fact that Don and the majority of people supporting his side have never met or talked to an illegal.

While I agree many do work for less than minimum wage many get paid a lot more than $15 an hour. Go to a home depot and ask a couple to help you re-shingle your roof - they'll say $20-$25 an hour.

A "family" in my community - roughly 12 people living in one home. 3 are legal aliens. Person A racks up debt over 5 years then files for bankruptcy. Then, rinse and repeat with person B. Then, rinse and repeat with person C. 15 years of low cost living then I guess they'll start over with person A. The other 9 bring in a lot of money that they send back to their home country to help their families.

This is not uncommon here in south Florida.
