Lawsuit seeks to take 'God' out of inaugural

Some atheists want Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony to leave out references to God and religion. In a lawsuit, the plaintiffs demand the words "So help me God" not be added to the end of the oath of office. The plaintiffs say they are being forced to choose between not watching the inauguration or watching endorsements of "purely religious notions."

I believe we should also remove the word United from United States as we, as a nation, are hardly united.

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

And remove preserve, protect, and defend to reflect the current administration's agenda of -

"rewrite, fabricate, and alter the Constitution of the gullable States."

I also find it quite curious and odd that, for a president, who often professes to be so religious and how big of a role God is in his life...

and who often mentioned the word God in his campaign for re-election...

and for someone who openly and courageously courted the religious right and moral majority vote...

I find it odd that neither George W. Bush or George H. W. Bush or even Ronald W. Reagan, three American presidents who often stated their religious beliefs and actions to court voters...

None of them quoted or read or even had the Bible OPEN to a Biblical verse during their inaugurations.

Bill Clinton did ... Both times.

Jimmy Carter did...

George W. did not - both times
Ronald Reagan did not - both times
George Bush, Sr did not.

In fact, you have to go back to January 20, 1969 to find a Republican President to quote a biblical verse from the Bible -

Richard M. Nixon.



I just find this odd and so amusing that the Religious right, the Moral Majority, and the entire nation of religious supporters who time after time pledged and cast their vote for these outstanding religious men to lead this nation...

were duped.

When the church starts paying taxes then we can say that there is no separation of church and state. They would be helping pay for state and national projects,leaders, etc.

Right now they get many exclusions and "passes" based on church faith to be "part" of the system.

Why do courts have people swear on a bible?

If person A swears to tell the truth so help me God and person B swears to tell the truth so help me God...

and the trial starts and they give testimony that is the truth but one has to clearly be lying...

Then what is the purpose of having the bible in the first place? It certainly did not put the "fear of God" into someone.

Do Muslims swear on the Bible in court?

An overwhelming majority of peeps have no scruples or morals or a conscious anymore. They could care less if they are swearing on the bible or the latest issue of Penthouse. That is how much (how little) it matters to them.

If the bible is still used in court as a matter of formality or because of traditions sake passed down for 200 years, then we might as well get rid of it. It is serving little purpose and people are totally disrespecting the Bible and the courts and the law.

To want a guess for a particular name is kind of like running through all the texts to find a meaning that you want.

There is the known Yahweh and the venacular omnipresent. I would be curious to know in recorded history how many different names God has had, not all gods in totality, but the Christian God.

But, it is a new year.

Will be a better year, I can tell already.

I think if Obama chooses to mention God, that's his call. It isn't government endorsing religion, it's one man following his own custom.

When government promulgates religious belief in an organized way (such as having sectarian prayers before meetings of government bodies, or including "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance) ... that's what I have trouble with.

P.S. If I'm ever sworn in as a government official or trial witness or anything like that, no chance I'm putting my hand on anybody's holy book.

Read it carefully.

I have highlighted the part that atheists seem to ignore. The First Amendment was written with the intent of preventing the United States from establishing a national religion, to give Americans citizens total religious freedom without the fear of being coerced to shoe devotion to any particular national religion.

"Free exercise" means Americans can profess their religious beliefs (whatever they may or may not be) in any manner, any time and in any place without prohibition from the government or the courts.

BTW....The term "separation of church and state" was never mentioned in the Constitution. It came from two sources....The Danbury Letter and the Supreme Court case Everson v. Board of Education.

Seems pretty short sighted to assume that one "guy" created the universe, every inch of amazing detail to our and every living organism's body, etc. He, Him... Gee, I wonder how that got started. Surely it wouldn't of had anything to do with men beliving only other men could do such things.

As for taking the word god out of the inaguration, I think it should be up to the person taking the oath. Which pretty much ensures it will always be there are there are much more religious than non and politicans will pretty much always play into whatever the majority wants.
