Let's list all the atrocities attributed to Christianity, shall we? Holocaust, Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the construction of the Holy Roman Empire - that's just to start you off.

The reason why people love to jump onto Islam now is because it is the religion being attributed to many terrorist attacks.

Like most religions, there are contradictions in their "holy book" (in this case the Koran (sp?)). Muhammed does preach about peace, friendship, love, etc (in fact, it is very similar to the Christian Old Testament and the Jewish Tor'ah).. early on but later he does become violent and preaches about using violence. Islam is one that tried to close the "contradiction" issue by stating that whichever is written later is the law (hence technically the passages about violence are more relevant than the peaceful ones). (It's been many years since I've read passages in the Koran, though).

But the issue is that most of the terrorist leaders, while proclaiming to be Islam are doing so because they know they can get more recruits this way who are willing to do what they can for their god. Islamic followers for hundreds of years have been pushed around, killed, targeted, and split apart. Just look at how messed up the map of the Middle East is - the country borders were set up based on kingdoms, trade routes, and colonies and not ethnic groups. So now you'll have several factions struggling for power and quite often a minority is in power and they take it out on the majority.

We also have the media who loves to pounce on the "Islamic Terrorist" bandwagon. Seriously, when was the last time you hear about a Christian Terrorist (Eric Rudolph?) or a Jewish Terrorist?

But - peaceful Islam can exist, look at Indonesia (the world's largest Islamic country). In 500,000's list there were only two attacks in Indonesia. One was a terrorist attack and the other was a retaliation due to a false rumor.

Things can happen though, but it has to come from within. I have several co-workers who follow Islam and hate this kind of press - people think they're terrorists. I remember in the days after 9/11 in New Jersey getting gasoline was very hard since most were owned by people from the Middle East (and in many people's eyes - Middle Eastern = Islamic). Gas attendants were being dragged out and beaten up. I stopped to get gas at my regular station and the attendant came out, reluctant, and told me the only reason he came out is because I was a regular and didn't think I would do anything.

The Followers of Islam (moderates?) need to stand up and say "KNOCK THIS (stuff) OFF!". Religious leaders need to stand up and say it, too. They need to denounce these actions - they used to but I don't see it anymore (that could also be due to a lack of press).

Like most religions I've studied Islam has issues within its writings and the leaders today (and the same goes for MANY religions out there) need to look at their texts and modernize them to fit into today's society. We all need to think forward.

Dewaya told police officials that Mukhtar Ahmed, 22, used to torture and beat his daughter Hajil Mai. “He kept accusing her of having had an affair even though he usually kept her locked up in the house for the duration of their marriage,” he said.
On Tuesday, Ahmed allegedly announced to their neighbourhood that his wife was a ‘kari’ and had an affair with their neighbour, Waleed. Waleed is said to have fled after the accusation.
Ahmed and seven of his friends slaughtered his wife in the courtyard of their house with sickles, knives and an axe.

For 15 centuries, there has been muslim vs. muslim, tribe vs. tribe terror and warfare. And, for 15 centuries, those of the muslim faith have come to battle those attempting to reform, enslave, or influence those faithful to Mohammed.
