Ouch! Damn. Sorry to hear that Tas.
And yes, the problem is only growing as the population is aging.
I see no real solution. A single payer system, such as proposed by the current administration might theoretically help bring costs down, could not be paid for, especially considering the waste & corruption involved with anything controlled by the government, not to mention the privacy issues & control over peoples lives as currently being debated by most of the country at the moment.
As a believer in capitalism, I would like to think there could be a private solution with competitive markets setting the rates for medical care. However, there is very little competition in the medical field. No doctors office I have been in lists their prices for the specific services offered, and they all have more work than they can handle anyway. The demand far outweighs the supply. There is no incentive for them to be competitive. Perhaps if there was a website/ national clearinghouse / reverse auction, elance sort of thing for medical services, where medical offices could bid on services required. Obviously there would still need to be catastrophic coverage for true emergencies, unexpected / unplanned events. I Dunno.
Hope you get through it safely though man.
Scott
