    Mexico collapsing?

Wow... I had heard it was bad, but what a mess.

    Mexico under siege

This one really caught my eye:

Families want answers from man who says he dissolved 300 people
Santiago Meza Lopez, known as El Pozolero (the Stew Maker), says he stuffed bodies into barrels of lye for drug cartels. He may be a good source of information about missing loved ones.

    Scary stuff.

I wouldn't want to go to Mexico now and travel agents are warning spring breakers about going to popular Mexican destinations. I guess it's back to Panama City and Daytona Beach?

Just back from a week Mexico city - had a wonderful time there.

When they say "the drug war has claimed 6,000 lives in three years" or whatever, you gotta remember that's actually a lowever level of gun violence than the US.

US, pop. approx. 300M, approx 18,000 gun deaths per year

MX, pop approx 100M, approx 6,000 gun deaths in three years

    Ultimate evil is not drug.
    It's MONEY!

I had a friend who was dealing drugs back in late 70s.
Never knew it until I saw his high school shown in news.

New Orleans is a very violent city to be sure.

But Tijuana and Rosarito are in all-out war right now, the murder rate is more than 10x San Diego, with lots of beheadings and 'acid baths'. Also lots of children and teenagers among the dead, probably because they saw something or has parents the drug dealers didn't like.

All of this just 25 miles from here.

And *THAT* is the scary part. Where's that fence we bought? I wonder what the percentage is of the different drugs that come through Mexico. If the percentage is high for pot, we should legalize, regulate & tax it to put them out of business. If the percentage leans more towards narcotics, shoot them as they come across the border until they get the idea.

As long as you are not actually in the drug trade in some capacity while in Mexico, I do not see the issue.

Resorts from what I hear and major destinations are very safe, I have family who lives there and travels back and forth.

Just like Jamaica. Don't go past the little bridge or fence.

But - this drug war is rather scary considering it is right next door. I'm sure it could very easily spill into the US.

Mexico has been a failed state for decades now. They flood the United States with millions of dirt poor shoeless immigrants (economic refugees), drugs, crime, gangs, and it just never seems to end. I grew up in Los Angeles, and I've seen the destruction and misery that flows like a river out of Mexico into our southern border states.

I often wonder what it will take for the US to finally help the Mexican government find a serious long term solution to their never ending economic problems. Honestly, are US politicians waiting to lose a border state or two to complete anarchy before they do something about it?

We have hundreds of thousands of US soldiers stationed from Germany to South Korea, yet we can't do anything about our own neighbor? Send a 100,000 US soldiers to Mexico City and finally overthrow that sorry excuse for a government, and then finally start putting some real infrastructure down that can help the Mexican people have a higher standard of living. At least those tax dollars would fix things on our own continent. Why in the hell are we nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Cuba is the safest place to vacation, not like any other local destination, people are friendly, you can walk around at 2:00 in the morning, no worries.
Been there 7 times and will not go back to Mexico, just can,t compare, of course, this applies to none us citizens, or the free world.

The problem is mostly in the border areas, not as bad further south.

You DON'T have to be in the drug trade to be killed. They are dumping 10 to 20 bodies each week (some headless) into the streets of Tijuana. If you see that happen, OR if you see them killed OR if you see them paying off a cop do you think they're going to let you stay alive? Of course not.

I also suspect that the number of murders is severely under-reported. The head of the Tijuana newpaper was killed last year for 'too much reporting', so his replacement is likely toning it down.

As far as it spreading into the US, that's already happening. Phoenix has had about 100 Mexican Mafia 'hits', and they keep finding bodies dumped in southern San Diego.

It's a really bad situation, and the other posters are right --- why are we wasting TRILLIONS on the Middle East when our own neighbor has a worse situation?
