A Shariah (sp?) Egypt is an extremely scary prospect for the world (imagine the money brought in though the Suez Canal). The only things scarier to me are a nucler Iran (openly) and Pakistan falling into anarchy.

Imagine how much $$$ the Suez Canal brings in - I remember when I was in Panama they said that it is something like $100,000 toll to go though the Panama Canal - I'm sure the Suez is at least the same, most likly more. Somethinig like that to a Shariah regime at 15,000 boats a year that's 1.5 billion a year (I'm sure the Suez is more considering higher demand and it is longer - some reports but the figure closer to a trillion dollars). According to a Dec 2008 report, the US gives Egypt $1.7 billion in aid ($1.3 billion for weapons, $103 million for education, $74 million for health care, $45 million for "civic participation and human rights".

They won't need US bribes to play nice with their neighbors. Not only will you see a resurgance of Al-Qaida and the Taliban in Egypt, but Egypt / Iran relations will most likely get better, Saudi Arabia could go either way (officially). What's in Iraq wouldn't stand a chance and Israel wouldn't either. With Israel's back to the wall you're looking at a good chance it would turn into a nuke fight.

If the politicians are going to play games to keep themselves in power with an unstable regime then maybe an outside force (UN?) needs to step up to the plate and do something about it. Serving their citizens and regional stability needs to be the top priority for whoever gets in charge (and the Muslim Brotherhood, IMO, won't make either any kind of priority).

The US has supported a tyrant for three decades, and not just in Egypt. Maybe it's not a bad thing to sit back and watch this time.

Do nothing and we're apathetic towards the people we put a dictator over for decades.
