'Buy American' rule in U.S. stimulus bill

Not only is this bad for Canada and Mexico, such measures also flaunt the rules contained within NAFTA. While it sounds great to Buy American or Buy Canadian, now is not the time to enact outright protectionist measures.

Hopefully before the final signing by Obama that this bill is re-examined by someone, anyone, with a single remembrance of history. Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act anyone?

That's a serious double edged sword.

While it would create more jobs in the US in steel mills, wages etc.. are higher in the US than most countries in the world therefore raising construction costs making the prices of the projects higher leaving less money available to hire more people, get more jobs done, etc..

Please tell Obama to keep his promise to dump free trade.

Chinese have already offered to pay more for oil than you do, but we cant sell it to them because our free trade agreement is you get all our surplus at world rates.

Protectionism never works. The so called "Stimulus" Bill will not help the economy at all in fact it will do more harm than good. We will see inflation at 20% or more in the next few years and the dollar will be at lows never seen before.

Boy we all have so much to look forward too.


BTW....The jobs they claim that will be created through this bill are not sustainable. There only temp. jobs because once the project work is completed there out of work. Plus there gov. jobs somebody has to pay for them which will be an increase tax burden on the middle class. This is why private enterprise is the only vehicle that will create lasting jobs. There paid for from the profits that private companies make. The only solution to this crisis is to lower taxes on the people who create jobs and to cut government spending. It won't happen with the current occupant in the Whitehouse.
