Stupid. Last time i checked slaves didn't get 4,000 for secondary education for work done. Hell, at that rate they are getting paid 40 bucks per hour. Its a pretty sweet deal though shouldn't be mandatory.

You gotta love screen shots..that is funny maybe they should verify things before writing them his website.
Wow... the tots who are spending an average of 55 hours per week in front of the TV and computer are REALLY upset that they'll be pulled away to actually do something for 50 hours a week! The comments are hilariously ignorant!

Here's the bottom line...if people want to take things out of context and just highlight one portion of anything and someone chooses to believe it, then they will believe anything.
Why depend on others to give you information?
Go to the source.
If you go with what this person is posting, did not Dubya essentially do the same thing when he gave his speech shortly after 9-11?
What the hell does that have to do with this?
It is the same thing - it is called volunteerism.
Last I recall, no person kidnapped, shackled, forced to walk to the coast, boarded on ships, hauled to far away lands, and sold on auction blocks were willing participants. That was slavery.
Yes. He's actually requiring *shock* that if you want money from the government to help with the expensive overpriced colleges students are choosing *shock* to do your part and do community service. How dare he!!?
Many countries have terms of service (forced) for their citizens, some even force you into the military at a certain age.
Wow, the US might force you to volunteer to help out communities and get a tax break for it.
How horrible of us (note: sarcasm).

The US government has no right to force anyone to volunteer and I would hope that Obama wouldn't be stupid enough to try it. It would be political suicide. Most Americans have no interest in seeing an American version of the Hitler youth after all it started out innocently enough just helping out in the community. I don't want to see the US go down that road. If any of you want to help out in your community I think that's great just as long as the government keeps its hands out of it.
This is an old problem, which I recall started from massive numbers of Global Warming threads. This is what, the 4th thread on this forum in about 2 weeks dealing with the same issue?
If you can call President Bush negative nicknames, may I call Obama as well?did not Dubya essentially do the same thing
I haven't researched this issue, but I definitely have strong ideas, so maybe you could quote the real information and provide sources, so I could respond intelligently. Why depend on others to give you information? I done this already and be glad to do it again one final time. This can all be found on Change.gov.
Entitled: American Serves
America Serves
"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."
The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.
There is no mandate that kids "must" do this. Looks like a pep talk to me. Post 9-11 style "volunteerism.
And to do 100 hours per college students for $4000 in exchange?
Hells bells, troubled youths who commit crimes are usually "sentenced" to do this. Now this may instill values in kids to help keep them out of trouble to begin with.
Imagine a fraternity or sorority taking a summer to volunteer to Habitat for Humanity or an approved agency! That is two and a half weeks of commitment!
And yet, it is not being forced upon anyone. It is a simple "if", "then" philosophy.
Sounds like an excellent plan.
The bottom line is, it is not mandatory, since that is my main issue!"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

Countries like Israel and Argentina have required military service. You don't see anything like Hitler youth in those nations. Plus, it isn't requiring military / police service, It's community service. Working with an approved organization and cleaning up litter along a highway, working in a soup kitchen or animal shelter, helping little old ladies across the street.
My god, people would be asked to do charitable things. That would be a step on the right direction and away form the completely selfish attitude many Americans have developed. This is a great way to stimulate the education system here in the US (as opposed to just handing out money (or making more money "available") as they think it was going to help)
I fully agree. if this was available when I was in college you can rest assured i would have taken FULL ADVANTAGE of this. It would have given me the opprotunity to finish a 4 year degree and go past by community college. Instead I had little money so I needed to go to work, where I've been FT for almost 15 years now. If I was allowed to do this at my age, you can bet your paycheck that I will set aside a weekend every other month to take advantage of it (16 hours in 2 days, so that's actually 6 weekends and a half day).Hells bells, troubled youths who commit crimes are usually "sentenced" to do this. Now this may instill values in kids to help keep them out of trouble to begin with.

DEfense forces are something else, and yes there are issues as well. Required service is definitely wrong, especially for minors. Volunteering is just that volunteering.Countries like Israel and Argentina have required military service.

Bingo.
So comparing this to the Nazi youth movement is a farce.
Italy also has it by age 26 for males.
And don't forget the US also had it during the Vietnam era. It was called the Draft.
So if we have an all volunteer armed forces today of American Youths (and God Bless em), would you have or anyone have the balls or the audacity to call them Hitler Youths?
Again, I see a great distinction between community service and defense service. Defense service is a national security issue.Italy also has it by age 26 for males.
