Amazing how the press is ignoring this. As much as we need to cut spending, space falls under the category of one of the few core responsibilities of any government - defense. It's possible that China will be able to win a war with the US in mere days, simply by taking out our satellites, communications and space defenses. But, hey...it's a democracy, and people have the right to vote it away.
This is really sad. Maybe we should be looking into a more permanant space station.

According to the Vision for Space Exploration, use of the space shuttle was to be focused on completing assembly of the ISS by 2011, after which it was retired. 2004 - NASA's current five-year budget is $86 billion. Most of the funding we need for the new endeavors will come from reallocating $11 billion within that budget.

Don't forget that we have a handful of civilian companies that are planning space flights. NASA is looking to outsource some of them for shuttle (no pun intended) missions to the ISS and other orbital stations to being crew and supplies.
NASA wants to go beyond Earth. Back to the moon (manned) and manned missions to Mars, as well as asteroids and maybe other bodies (like the asteroid they found tailing Earth today).
