[QUOTE=hugegrowth;1982060]Pretty soon all our lumber will be going to China anyway - lol. We shipped almost as much lumber to China as to the US last year, and it's growing by double digit % each year. Canada ships 30x as much lumber to China now as it did 10 years ago.[/QUOT

that is a good point, we'll just sell to someone else that wants to trade with us - makes economic sense.

Tax on Canadians to enter the US seems silly to me.
All income & property taxes should be unconstitutional.

If there were a flat sales tax across the board for everything (sales tax, not VAT tax), and no income or corporate taxes, multinationals would come flocking to the U.S., bringing jobs & their money. Everyone would be taxed fairly, it would encourage saving rather than leveraging, and there would be no more loopholes as with income taxes or municipalities raising millage rates when values go down, etc, etc etc...

I look at this as a joke. The revenue generated by this "fee" will be spent on the interest the US owes by the time you've read my post, literally. As a Canadian this just cements my resolve to stay out of that swirling toilet bowl. The only thing the US has going for it from my perspective is states with a warmer climate.

And even those are losing their appeal, fast.

i can understand the US could use the extra money, that's fine... but to me its like charging your family a fee to come over to your house.

"yes mom you can come over, don't forget the $5.50 fee."

Required Reading Before Coming Into The US:

If you’re new to the United States, or to the internet, or to Earth, you might be surprised at the way some people act. From all-caps posts on web message boards to pickup trucks parked across two spaces, you’ll see people behaving as if they belong to some anointed class of people who are allowed to do whatever they want with no concern for the comfort or convenience of others.

    Does it suck? Yep
    Will it change anything? Nope

Since it's restricted to air and sea only, people will think..."what's an extra $5.50 on a $1000 airline or cruise ticket?" (that's assuming they even notice)

Had they targeted the people who cross the border in cars/buses/trains, then it would have been an all-out crap show.

Our PM, travel agencies, general public can complain all they want, but it won't change anything.

A few years ago I worked in a building that had a passport office on the main floor and when the States introduced the new passport policy, the line ups were out the door. People would wait for hours to get their passport renewed.

At the same time the media was quoting loads of people (who probably didn't travel in the first place) who said they wouldn't visit the States because of the new rule.

maybe it will and maybe it wont - but lets do they math just in case they didn't

1 - Lets say on average a tourist spends $1,000 on average in the states (shopping, hotel, entertainment, etc)

2 - now what if only 5% of people did not go to the states in protest over the new charge and went to Cuba, lol
    - using round numbers of 1,000,000 per month: So tourism would go down by 5% or 50,000 people loosing (50k x $1,000) $50,000,000 in tourist dollars and some tax dollars not earned.

    3 - but don't worry, the goverment collected $5,225,000 ($5.50 x 950k) in tax revenue.

thats a net loss of $44,775,000 - oops

I would think the government would want to make it more attractive to tourists.

Really, how much money will this give to the treasury, and how much debt will this pay for. It's just going to cause a lot of bad pr with the Canadians. I just wonder if the sports teams will get off some how.

I'm not syaing I agree with it, because I don't. Canadians should be just about the last people the US should be taxing

I'm just saying that it tourism will most likely not be affected at all

If you ask me, we should charge $50 instead of 5.

Just think of the Sales Tax Canadians are saving by coming here and buying our goods, One member reported the sales tax rate in Canada is 15%!, Canadians can make up that $50 in no time, just by traveling down south to Oregon which NO sales tax. We know you guys do that already.

    Are you serious?... OMG!

With that comes Health Care correct?

California has the highest sales tax in the country, LA County is 9.75% and were outraged by it.

you are supposed to declare your purchases and pay taxes on them if they amount to over 100 dollars when you return to canada. of course many people don't but if they want to look in your car, you are in trouble. with the time it takes, unless you live right at the border its really not worth the trouble. people love a deal but they don't take into account the gas or food bought on the way, etc.
