Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he doesn't think much of a new border tax that's being proposed by the United States, calling it a cash grab designed to help a budget crisis.
The U.S. government wants to slap a $5.50 inspection fee on Canadians who travel into the country by air or by sea. Canadians crossing into the U.S. by land wouldn't have to pay the fee.
"I think it's clear the U.S. government is casting around for ways to raise revenue," Harper said Thursday. "I think that this is not a useful way to do that."

Its sad to see the once powerful US government reduced to panhandling.
oh, we pay 100$ to get a visa to usa or canada and there is around 80% possibility you get a refuse and loose the money
I guess you better both develop your Anti-aircraft missiles because middle east will not send civil planes anymore to hit your towers![]()

I think Canadians are worth much more than $5.50.
I bet they are looking into all kinds of ways to make money - federal and many state governments are strapped. That is why online gambling could get legal in the US, as long as the govt gets it's share. I've even heard some states are thinking of legalizing pot, what an increase in tax revenues that would be.

$5.50 is the price of freedom?
Charge them more!![]()
US: Yo Canada!
Canada walks up to US.
Canada: What's up neighbor?
US: I don't know how to tell you this so I'm just gonna come right out and say it.
Canada: Okay.
US: I'm going to have to charge you $5.50 whenever you come over, regardless of the reason.
Canada: Uum...Ok. Where is this coming from?
US: Well you know things are tight on my end.
Canada: Oh! I see.
Moment of consideration...
Canada: You know we've been friends a long time. I could give you free advice on how to manage your personal finances.
US: No thank you.
Canada: It's free.
US: I heard you the first time. I need financial restructuring on a monumental scale. You can't handle it.
Canada: What if I told you there are other ways to make $5.50?
US: I'm listening.
Canada: I'll charge $5.50 per suggestion.
US: Hmm...What if these "suggestions" don't work?
Canada: I'll only show you what worked for me. What you choose to do thereafter is entirely your business.
US contemplates for a moment.
US: Deal. Come on over neighbor. And don't forget the $5.50.
Canada: Of course not. Can you give me a day to prepare some suggestions.
US: Certainly. All the time you need.
Canada: You are too kind.
Next day, Canada walks up to the US residence. knock* knock*
US: Who's there?
Canada: A list of suggestions.

LOL good one!
But not too far off $5.50 US will be about $1.25 Canadian.
The new boss - same as the old boss - without a clue. They will lose much more in potential tax revenue from Canadians spending their money south of the 49th than they will get from this cash-grab as some Canadians will just spend here instead. That SHOULD be obvious but anything obvious seems lost in American politics since 2002 regardless of party.
I read about the rumours of Ron Paul and Ralph Nadar getting their supporters together. Now that's change that could work!![]()
Yes and homes in Arizona, but the problem is the large part of all cross-border trips are for getting cheap gas, milk and cheese. Small border towns are going to bear the brunt of this. There was already a sharp decrease in visitors when they instituted the passport requirement - this will only exacerbate that.
Canada could always slap a $5.50 dollar fee for each of those 2 million barrels of oil we send south each day... Americans already have cheap gas - you won't notice another .10 cents per gallon...![]()
They just increased the passport fees 35% last year too.
