MI5 seems to have caught up with another young Russian spy, Katia Zatuliveter. The agency believes she's one of many "sleepers" in the UK. Why does Russia have all these sleepers stationed in the West? Frankly, I think the leaders are paranoid.
In all fairness Russia could be less paranoid. If only it would re-focus on deregulating some of its markets (e.g natural gas) it would free up its economy for boundless growth. And it will be able to compete with the likes of Germany and Japan in 10-20 years. Economic might is something to take pride in. Has always been. Instead spies are stationed abroad to gather intel for reasons one can only ponder.
Mr. Putin is a hard man. He seems to regret the wide scale deregulation of government controlled markets that ensued in the 90s during Yeltsin's tenure. Perhaps it's the fear that some of the country's oligarchs who rose to influence the political landscape may not be in favor of the old way of doing things. The old way of doing things meant no one deserved as much power to influence the political climate. Russia needed to be as different from America and the West as much as possible. The 40+ demographic is in disagreement. They know Russia can change for the better domestically and on the global arena. They want to see it change for the better. They may not have been happy with the Yeltsin years but at least they know he started something. And then Putin came in. Not that Putin wasn't in favor of economic growth and private ownership. He was. But he couldn't stand to see the oligarchs donate for causes against him or his party. He blames Yeltsin for allowing them to become so strong and influential.
So it's kind of ironic that in trying so hard not to copy the West, especially the US, modern Russia sees it fitting to plant sleepers in the same West. Anna Chapman is very popular in Russia. If it turns out Katia is a sleeper, I suspect she will be too. But they will only remain popular for the younger than 35 age group; the very same group that votes for Putin. No wonder Chapman made it on the cover of Maxim.
Even if Russia isn't in favor of UK or US foreign policies, this whole spy thing is so...Cold War. The world has moved on and Russia should too. The new nationalism is economic might. Even China gets it.

And I agree with the paranoid part.
Many are of the belief that Putin is still in charge and he is the former KGB chief.

Also, there is talk that Putin is so powerful that he has manipulated the system so well that he may be the de facto ruler for life.

Thanks Doc. Many do believe Putin still is in charge. Medvedev strikes me as a smart fellow. But I think he is of the Putin and co school of thought. Which means a majority of his ideas aren't really his. What a shame that Putin can't understand that his wealthy opposition is driven to unseat him for the very same reasons that he locks them up; they are just as terrified of his political "practices" as he is of theirs.

Getting back to the thread, I am not sure what the Russian spy ring here in the states were after.
Most likely technology, software, or programming that they can't get elsewhere.

Moderator. Please, you are welcome to close this thread when you read this. Personally, I don't mind that it went out of topic. What I do mind is Raider criticizing Doc over a simple comment I made about having 14,000 posts. I saw no reason for Raider's post in this thread and that's why I followed up with an entry of my own. It seems my comment stoked Raider on.
It is partly my fault that the thread spiraled into another flame war instigated by Raider. Yet I don't regret my post. At the end of the day every member on this board reserves the right to make his/her own character judgments of any member. We certainly don't need her Majesty Raider (or anyone else for that matter) to tell us what she thinks of Doc or any other member. We will make up our minds ourselves.
