Good point. Religion is mostly man made dogma. Spirituality is something different.
It's fear. Fear that one would be taken and forced to be something they dislike or despise or that goes against their religion. Fear of the unknown of the afterlife and wanting the comfort of a leader figure who seems to have it all figured out.
Labeling anything or anyone that goes against it as "evil", "sinful" or "corrupt" and then be naive to the fact that there is a whole world out there with different experiences, lives, viewpoints, cultures, etc, being unwilling to respect that while demanding it, sometimes violently, for themselves. It's happened since the beginning of time.
...Yet I wouldn't totally blame "religion"...it's the people who abuse religion and those who follow with blind faith (the blind faith that is too afraid to ask questions, inspect and gain real understanding) but rather follow the word of a handful of mortals who claim to accurately represent the infallible word of God.
