Notice there is *only* one establishment exempt: Parliament. Bloody 'nanny' state.

The ugly side of socialism. Once you start paying for people's health care, you have to start controlling their behaviour.

You're joking! No you're not? That is funny. You'll have to explain to the uninitiated the "nanny state". I presume that is a reference to needing a babysitter and someone telling you what to do?

Italy did that a couple of years ago. 50 euro fine for the individual smoking, 2500 euro for the establishment. I was there in the August after it went into effect in the previous June. I knew a few of both that got nailed and fined.

Re: smoking ban arrives in uk

Honestly, I agree with the right to ban smoking in Public. I don't agree with the right to ban smoking inside your privately owned business establishment. Just like I don't agree that the state can tell you how much rent you can charge on a house that you own.

Re: smoking ban arrives in uk

We have the same ban here in Sweden. Im a "part smoker" and at first I was totally against the rule. But now its actually pretty nice that my clothes smells good when I arrive home from the pub and i smoke a lot less when im out partying due to this.. On another side, here in Sweden, the fighting outside the pub/discos has raised due to people get out to take a smoke which lead to fights instead It was pretty hard in the beginning but in the long run I think it was a good idea.

Does the UK have 31 days in June? It's about time. Germany, Switzerland and France need to do the same.

Yeah Doc, right on the "nanny state".

Westminster is excluded from the ban as it is classed as a Royal Palace.

Load of bollocks

I agree pretty much I smoked for 12 years. Gave up , no patches, no healthcare issues etc.
Just willpower & was going through breakup too. No, i don't want a medal, lol.
I won't ever be one of those reformed smokers but have always thought smoking anywhere is crazy, also as an ex-fireman. It's health & safety lol. It's true though.
Think back. I'm only 35, but i can remember smoking on planes, tubes, buses.
It seemed normal, but it's insanity looking back.
Plus the real harmful bit is the bit that drifts off the end of the cigarette, unfiltered.
The bit non-smokers are forced to breathe.
The wrong thing is making out smokers to be criminals. They need help 'if' they want to quit & it should be all free. Including patches etc.
One of the main reasons i gave upo was i didn't want to give the example to my daughter (even though never smoked indoors anyhow) & wanted to feel healthier.
I think it's a good thing.
An example of where it's gone crazy is like our local litter law. If you drop a cigarette you get fined £50 ($100) Madness on both fronts.
UK is not a place to ever move to on all fronts. But that's another story

I wish USA would ban weapons first What i mean is, by smoking normally you only do harm to yourself. Not as i have any problems with banning smoking in public places... Not at all

Not true. That's the main reason for the ban. Passive smoking.

I understand the implications of second-hand smoke. Which is why I make it a point to stay away from groups when I smoke. But there are also the little cry baby do-good whiners that it doesn't matter how far away from you are smoking they will make it a point to walk over in your direction and get in your face. Next time it happens I'm going to extinguish my cig right on their forehead.

The government should not be able to tell business owners how to operate their business. If a business owner allows smoking and a non-smoker doesn't like it they have the option not to frequent that establishment.
