Virginia Veteran Wins Battle to Keep His Flagpole in Yard

A 90-year-old Medal of Honor recipient can keep his 21-foot flagpole in his front yard after a homeowner's association dropped its request to remove it, a spokesman for Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said Tuesday.

Who complained about a 90 year old WWII Medal of Honor vet in the first place?

Whether he had a 21 foot AMERICAN FLAG in his front yard or a 21 foot rusted sail boat, leave him be.

America should be worried about other things like increasing the $1000 a month survival benefit for Medal of Honor veterans rather than an AMERICAN FLAG blocking their precious view.

Exactly. Definitely disrespectful to a veteran's right to honor the flag he fought for.

Yep - many home owner's associations (HOAs) feel they they are above the law and the constitution. Many times are nothing more than just a bunch of power tripping home owners or corrupt (or both). This is also coming from someone serving on their HOA board...

I think the strictest HOA in the US is still Celebration, Florida (set up by Disney). You can't as much put a small potted plant on your porch without their approval - They even probably dictate what kind of car(s) you can have in your driveway.

Our HOA's rules said that no freestanding structures could be built without prior approval. We put up a small shed. The board wrote to us pointing out that we were breaking the rules and expressing their confidence that our shed would be taken down. Ten years later, it's still here.

(Their letter pointed out the wisdom of the development's founders, back in the 1930's, in setting up such excellent HOA rules. Our copy of the rules contains [though it had been crossed out] a restriction that houses in our development may not be sold to non-Caucasians. Ah yes, the wisdom of the founders ....)
