It says in the article your link leads to that the tags are removable.

However, it does seem there are other concerns to do with ID cards, etc.

"Wal-Mart is demanding that suppliers add the tags to removable labels or packaging instead of embedding them in clothes, to minimize fears that they could be used to track people's movements. It also is posting signs informing customers about the tags."

Did you actually read the article? People have been using RFID tags for years.

"This ability to wave the wand and have a sense of all the products that are on the floor or in the back room in seconds is something that we feel can really transform our business," said Raul Vazquez, the executive in charge of Wal-Mart stores in the western U.S."

Are people worried wal-mart will find out what size pants you wear?

this has been done for years, ever since the rfid tag was introduced.
I do not believe the angle they are using. helping their employees know what items to re-stock

I wish they used this technology with world cup.

Yes RFID chips are about to be EVERYWHERE. Even in the packaging of the foods you buy in the grocery store. You can easily short them out and they only work from short distances (perhaps with a scanner outside your house). This isn't big brother's doing, it's being done in the name of efficiency. The price of RFID chips just keeps getting cheaper and cheaper...it only makes sense from a business standpoint. I think our government should take some precautionary measures to protect people's privacy but unfortunately I doubt that will happen.

Wouldn't it actually be a good idea for children, e.g., if your children get lost.

RFID chips will help to eliminate the long check out lines. Just image rolling your loaded shopping cart thru a scanner and getting an itemized printout along with the prices of every item in it. No more waiting in long lines. I'm all for it but it will need laws and regulations to make it fair and safe for everyone. And we all know what that means...the republican hard right will all be against any new laws or regulations. They will want to let the greedy rich regulate themselves much as they have done with the banks, wall street, and the oil barrons......and look what that got us.

Er No. Some jackass corporation or government organization will find a way to abuse it. No thanks!

You guys are worried about RFID violating your privacy? You are a few years late on this one, they are already putting them in people.

My girlfriend inserted an rfid tag in my "package" one night when I was drunk & half asleep ( I thought she was just being kinky) and to date I have been unable to remove it, I guess this is the way she keeps track of my package 24/7.
