    Another 131 domains seized

Another Thanksgiving and Another 131 Domain Names Seized by Homeland Security
    By Michael Berkens
    Michael Berkens

Last year I wrote a post right after Thanksgiving entitled: "While You Were Eating You're Turkey Homeland Security Was Seizing 9 Domains".

Well I could have repeated the headline today except the number would be 131 domains rather than just 9.

Looks like Homeland Security is going to make domain seizures on Thanksgiving as common in the US as Turkey and Stuffing.

Here are the domain names seized yesterday.

Most of the seized domain names look like they were allegedly selling sports jerseys but there are some other brand knockoffs as well in the list.

As always all seized domains are either .com or .net's

All the domains now have what has become a well known page:

Would make for an interesting article.

I am sure the actual manufacturer or retailer contacts the authority first. All the listed sites appear to have been selling knock-off brands.

About two years ago, I was looking for a particular football jersey. I landed up on a chinese site that had every imaginable jersey from every sports team or venue. The prices were about 20-25% of the actual item. All you had to do was tell them which name and number you wanted on a particular jersey. Detail images showed the actual label (Reebok, Nike, CCM) which were pretty decent in quality but still recognizable as a fake.

My guess is that it is easier for the DOJ to take down a site with an american registrar than foreign.

Still, it would be interesting to know the process.

Yup, it does not end. Seize one day and open up a new site the next. Never ending.

Just like the piece of sh*t contractors in my area. Poor work, don't complete the job, file bankruptcy and open the next day under a new name.

    Yes, no URDP.

Seized by the feds, sites taken down.

These were sites selling fake goods, forgeries, knock offs, etc.

Why would it be a "false claim"?

Read the article. Look at the names. Nearly every one is sports related site selling bogus goods.

If you are Reebok and a company in Macau is making fake goods with your brand on it, is that a false claim? Or Nike? of Kappa?

    May never have to.

These guys are pretty ballsy such as calling one site http://www.2012nflJerseysChina.com

If that is not a tip off to bogus fake goods...

Probably not a good idea to link to these sites. Won't be long before the DoJ seizes domains that mention domains already seized.

Which is exactly what's wrong with the new law fast tracking through Congress.

The links in this thread are enough to get this entire forum yanked, domain seized.... "They were linking to counterfeit sites"

This means that any blog, forum, or social network site that gets spammed could be taken down. Which means any site that allows comments or posts, if taken literally.

Precisely. This story is now appearing on WIRED.com (reporting the number to be 150) and numerous other online outlets.

Discussing the illegal activity attached to a domain name or site is hardly cause for concern. Aside from the legal section not being seen by non-members, the contents are not appearing on search engines.

When pressing someone for what is legal, typically you have to know and discuss what is illegal.

If I wanted to start a site MyJerseyCollection dot com and wanted to showcase my personal jersey collection, I have no doubt that this would be perfectly fine. However, if I started such a site to sell faked, forged, pirated knockoffs, I would expect to be shut down.
