a question of opinion to change a websites domain name

I was asked a question by a friend of mine. and I'm not sure what to answer, I think there might be some TM issues

I would like to see some of the other dnfers views on this

    Thanks Guys

    -Cjmacd

Synopsis of what I was asked

    "
I decided to change my website from AimAddict.com to InsaneBuddy.com to prevent trademark issues with AOL and confusion with the site IMaddict.com. Does the new name have the same potential as aimaddict.com?

    "

any input would be greatly appreciated.

    The same potential as what?

AOL claims a trademark in "AIM" for their instant messenger, and they have gone after quite a few domain names with "AIM" in them.

In contrast to those who seem to think that getting into a dispute is a wonderful way to try to make a philosophical point, in the real world one attempts to minimize risks and costs.

Is it safe to assume that your friend's site is IM related? What's the angle?

I think you'd have to tell us a lot more about it if you want opinions on the new name's value as compared to the old one.

My site is currently at www.aimaddict.com

I like the domain name aimaddict.com better than insanebuddy.com .

Never admit on an open forum that "if AOL wants me to move I will".

Someone at AOL/TimeWarner might be a member. Or, one of our prominient lawyers may represent them. (They have a job, too!)

And, if you follow some of the comments on this forum. You will read where one of the opposing lawyers used comments posted on DNF in the papers filed.

    Just be careful.

I do some naming at http://namingsystems.com

My opinion is that you can do better than InsaneBuddy. It sounds like some guy you want to shake.

And, yes, don't start a fight with AOL! Their lawyers will pick their teeth with you!
