registries blamed for doubtful dealings

"registrars are being accused of dubious dealing in names, and the debate reached a personal level in an exchange between Paul Stahura, CEO of registrar ENOM and Sarah Deutsche, associate general counsel for Verizon. Deutsche accused ENOM of holding “144 variations of our Verizon trademark and our Superpages trademark, which is the name of our online directory”.

The article is a little misleading about what happened. The full transcript of the discussion is here:

Re: registries blamed for doubtful dealings

Interesting stuff... I feel the current system of trying to obtain an expired name is completely wacked. It needs to be regulated somehow so that the process is fair, which it's far from. Maybe a lottery format or something similar would work - I'm not sure. What I do know is that if someone wants a premium expired name they better have money, and a huge amount.

Would've been an interesting catfight. Oh and John, did you notice
if anyone even snickered upon seeing the words "Suggesting that
ICANN cut its revenue - 'Priceless' "? :-D

Why should obtaining a valuable domain be any different than obtaining anything else of value?
