One interesting piece of information out of that article was the statement of 40 million visitors within the two week period.
That amounts to 1 billion hits a year. I assume Verisign could have made a lot of money by steering that traffic to well paying websites.
I dont see the big probelm here.

im glad they shut it down but it is a waste of traffic if verisign wasn;t so hoggish and gave a larger % of the revenue from site finder to a better the web fund or some other charity they probably would be able to keep it?
They wouldn't have been able to keep it no matter what. It just causes too many issues beyond lost http traffic.
