"webs" -- Could I have copyright problems?

Hello.

Right now I'm developing little site that allows people to create super-quick, free webpages.

The name I'm planning to use is [word]webs.com. I wasn't specifically looking for a word ending with "webs", but after searching through various lists of names, this is the only decent-sounding available name that I could find.

Now... Given that the site WEBS.COM (previously known as freewebs.com), provides a similar service, (quick, free, online website-building), is there any possibility that I could land myself in trouble from them?

Or is webs such a generic term that it doesn't matter. Like MAIL.

Thanks

Not an expert on this field, but if its similar to regular copyright issues, it would probably have a lot to do with the question of whether people looking for them would mistake you for them.

I would make the design as different as possible and the first word as distinguishing as possible.

Please do not view this is legal advice in lieu of asking a lawyer.

Good luck!

That is a trademark question, not a copyright question.

Yeah, thanks. I actually noticed that straight after posting, but I couldn't seem to edit my post.

Trademark Search on Domain Name

U need to do a trademark availability search to determine risk and avoid a potential domain name dispute. It sucks having to re-brand once you are up and running.

Part of the cost of doing business. Here are some trademark registration and trademark clearance posts with more information.

Good luck!

Thanks. I've just searched TESS and there's no trademark for "Webs".
So that must mean I'm safe.
