How Do You Make A Forum Page???

I'm Pretty New To The Domain Business, But I Know I Want To Make A Forum Site. I Have Absolutely No Clue On How To Go About Doing This. Do You Have To Code It Your Self? (I Hope Not) Can You Download Pre-Built Forums?
What Kind Of Hosting Will I Need? Please Understand That I Have Very Limited Knowledge Of Web Development. Anything Would Help.

Thank You James...

Re: How Do You Make A Forum Page???

Well, to have an effective forum you're going to want a pretty robust server.

From your post, I'd have to guess that you're not up to coding a forum. That's a pretty advanced topic. With that in mind, you'll want to check into VBulletin, phpBB, and Invision Powerboards (I'm sure there are other alternatives, I just haven't really checked into it.)

Re: How Do You Make A Forum Page???

Basically, there are two main options, vBulletin (what DNforum uses) which costs $160, or phpBB which is free. Pretty much any cPanel hosting should do, unless your forum becomes MEGA-popular, (in which case you will probably want a dedicated server, but that won't be necessary in the beginning), so you should be able to pick up hosting for about $10 per month.
Then you probably want to get someone to install it for you, people on here will do that for around $10-$15.

Then you just need to find some users... ;-)

Feel free to PM me if you want further help with this...

vBulletin and Invision Board are one of the best forum script imo. They are not free, but its worth the money compared to phpbb which gets hacked a lot.

Re: How Do You Make A Forum Page???

There is software to create forums.

If you don't know how to do it, there are lots of designers and programmers.

That's not the problem. The big problem is getting traffic for it and making money with it. That takes ALOT of work.

Re: How Do You Make A Forum Page???

phpBB over, free and you can do almost whatever ya want with it!

I've modded mine almost to a vB level, functuality is about the same, but its down to how much time and experience you've got.

The basic installation is clean, and functional. vB offers a lot more features that just tend to confuse new users.

Hey James:

If you're more into developing your site, and not as proficient in programming (like me) then vBulletin is without a doubt the best way to go. Just browse the internet and look at all of the major players in the forum arena (er, DNF too). Everybody uses vBulletin. Why? Because, hands down, it's the best. For $160 you get a lifetime license and a year's free upgrades. After that, a nominal fee.

I'm a dunce when it comes to programming, and I had my forum installed on my host server in 15 minutes. It comes ready to run out of the box, but I must admit that if you want to tweak it for your own personal look and feel, then that does take some head scratching. But then, you can hire that out, or buy a custom skin for peanuts.

The vBulletin community is incredibly robust, as well. I've found another three or four independent forums devoted to vBulletin, for users, power users, webmasters, professional vBulletin installers, vBulletin "skin" developers, and on and on.

You'll never get a home made forum package for 160 bucks, if you do you'll get what you pay for. With the huge installed base, the vBulletin folks can devote countless engineering and support hours to their product.

That's my $0.02.

Hope this helps,

Steve
