Red face fitness teacher/mom from SC

I have recently become interested in creating and selling domain names in hopes of additional income for a part-time stay at home mom! It is quite an addictive hobby/job!!! I have a lot to learn, and I hope that a "sale" or parking income in the near future will continue to fund my creative endeavors. For now, I am soaking in all the info I can, and trying not to spend too much money on the front end. (I've already received some of the infamous spam/scam mail, some quite clever, although pitiful).

In my spare time, I love hunting fossils (big sharks teeth in particular), exercising and "playing" outdoors, reading about anything non-fiction(if it is of interest), and spending time with my husband and kiddos.

    Welcome!

I'd also suggest looking into affiliate marketing, starting your own blog, and learning to build websites (maybe not all at once). There is a lot of information here to hep you. Before you spend a lot of money registering/buying domains, make sure to read a lot about what kind of domains have value.

Thanks so much. I created fossilgal.com for the very reason of blogging about our fossil trips, finds, etc! I am trying to find out more about selling domains with or without an attached website? I read about both sides, depending on the type of domain name. And rather than creating a full-blown site, just to "develop" the domain name by adding keywords to the associated page to increase traffic???? Right now, it feels like a "treasure hunt" to think up and create just the names based on using the criteria for creating good names. However, I also realize that a name is only worth as much as someone will pay, right? So that is why I am looking into PPC. Just started reading about affiliate marketing. I've also created a few names that I want to expand into social marketing concepts. Hmmm, if we could only buy more hours in the day, right?

Ok, here's what you do if you haven't done anything yet.

Go to Blogger.com and join/login and start a blog. Name your blog 'fossilgal' if it's available, if not choose the next best available name.

Follow the instructions to choose a template, colors, etc. Don't worry, you can change this anytime later if you change your mind. The key now is to just set up your blog.

Write your first post, it can be something like "Welcome to FossilGal.com, this blog is about......."

Go to GoDaddy and forward your domain fossilgal.com to your blogger site, so anyone who types in your domain will go to your blog.

Try to post on your blog at least once every day or two, I'd say at least three times per week minimum.

Later you can put adsense on your blog, and join affiliate programs for fossil related items (eg: sell fossil books on Amazon Associate program). Right now though I would concentrate on posting to your blog and getting it how you want it to look.

Join Twitter and add your blog url to your Twitter account. Post a tweet every time you do a blog post, and include the link to your blog. Trade links with other fossil related sites to boost your SEO ranking.

If fossil hunting is your passion then you should enjoy doing a blog about the subject. People will be able to tell you enjoy it and will keep returning to your blog if you post regularly. You can set this all up for free and are only limited by your own effort and creativity.

Thank you SO much for the info. I had set up on blogger.com, but that is as far as I had gotten! I have a couple other domain names that are of interest, but some I just want to sell down the line as a name, and not spend a lot of time developing a site. Should I do the same for those, or do something else to boost SEO ranking?

I cannot thank you enough for your input. This is so much fun for me. Makes me wish I'd taken marketing courses when I was in school (almost 20 years ago!). Better late than never!

    Welcome!

Register Less New Domains, And save money to buy quality ones from the resellers.

BEST WAY to add income source which you can rely on is developing a good domain name, that has value and has good search term in google. You can rely on that income.

DO NOT RELY on parking company, make it more of a last window. Personally, I quit parking since 2007. You can do little hard work and earn x,xxx via the site, or else, earns XX from PPC.

    Welcome fossilgal,

You may want to take a look at "Wordpress" for your website.

I would start with one blog. Once you have that up and going, do as many more as you feel you have time for.

Focusing on one blog as you go through the learning curve will be easier. Setting up the 2nd and 3rd blogs, etc, will be easier after spending some time on the first.

Welcome! Pretty new myself, but have learned a real lot here already. Probe those posts thoroughly, as there's pearls of wisdom all over the place. Doesn't take long before you start seeing consensus on the basics. Look into DFCollege here too, it's great advice and dialogue! Good luck!

    Welcome to DNF

To answer your question, I agree with hugegrowth - put focus on your main blog to begin with. Though I personally recommend wordpress, as I find it significantly easier to work with.

Creating an SEO ranking for a domain with a site that has relevant content only has any value if

    1. The end user will realistically want to keep the site once they buy the name

This is because if you were to build a site about, say, reusable coffee mugs (first thing that came to mind), the pagerank is only meaningful to a purchaser if it will benefit them.

Let's say you build a site out so well that when somebody searches "reusable coffee mugs" on google, yours comes first. But, for argument's sake, the domain is "coffeemugqueen dot com".

The keywords in the domain name are not picked up by google for such searches, as "coffee mug queen" has nothing to do with reusable coffee mugs. Rather, your content, relevant backlinks, and meta tags will make google pick it up.

If you are looking to ultimately sell it to an end user, there is value in this, but only with the site.

That said, a coffee mug manufacturer is not necessarily going to see the value, as they would need to leave the site essentially as-is to keep the pagerank and promote their own product.

There are very few people who understand this.

Whereas a keyword domain name (let's go with the obvious exact match here, "reusablecoffeemugs dot com") has self-explanatory value which is visible to many more people, and can be expressed in plain language.

Most people will look at you with a very lost expression as soon as you start talking about "pageranks" and the like.

So, that said, if you think that you can sell the domain AND the site based on the page rank, so be it. Just keep in mind that this will be a harder sell than just a domain name.

    2. If the money justifies it

Most of my domain names I sell for $xxx. That's because I'm all about the quick flip, with the exception of select names that I'm willing to hold out for the right buyer on.

Assuming you can find the right buyer for a site plus domain package, you also have to consider whether or not how much money you get out of them can justify the effort you put into building the site out and doing SEO work on it.

As I said, it will be a difficult sell to get most to see the value in it. If I were you, I'd stick to just the domains for the time being. But maintain a few "experiment" projects and see how high you can rank on them.

Just as a bit of a crash course to try things out. If you start getting inquiries, then it looks like it's working.

For you, it's a matter of getting your feet wet and seeing what works. I've found my comfort zone in selling domains for $xxx. Sooner or later, you'll realize your "eureka!" moment. All it will take is a bit of playing around.
