Register Today on DNForum IT'S FREE!Hi. I'm a freelance writer who is new to domain selling. Over the last couple of years, I've purchased a small portfolio of domain names, and I'm finally getting around to selling them. Some women like shoes. I like domains. In the past 48 hours, I've probably made at least three good mistakes already! Anyway, I hope to learn a lot here, and of course, I'm happy to help with whatever I can help with.

Welcome to the forum lyrafire! Glad to have you here!
I'd recommend you spend some time poking around the threads on this forum. They are informative to no end.
I'll tell you the top three things you need to know from experience...
1. Stick to domains that will sell. This generally means that your domains should be in major extensions such as .com, .net, .org and even .us. Remember, somebody has to want to buy your domain order for you to sell it. Keep that in mind before you invest your hard-earned money.
2. Keep your WHOIS information accurate. Go to www.who.is (easiest WHOIS site, IMO) and look up one of your domain names right now. If it does not show your present contact information, then I would recommend doing something about it. This is because if somebody wants to contact you to buy your domain, they have no means of doing so unless it is listed in a marketplace such as sedo. Which, I, having bought my share of domains, am discouraged from using, as it doesn't allow for as personal an interaction, and from the seller's standpoint, takes a significant chunk of their proceeds.
A domain name without an accurate WHOIS is like a car with a "For Sale" sign and no phone number. Interested buyers with money in their pocket can pass by it all day long, but they don't know who to get in touch with to give their money to. So they'll look somewhere else and give their money to someone else.
3. Don't pay any attention to any emails claiming to be from an interested buyer, contingent on an appraisal which you must pay for. They are ALL scams, and rather common. They get sent to owners of domains by the thousands, and some people actually fall for it.
Just consider this. If they're really interested in it and considered about the value of the domain, won't they pay for the appraisal themselves? Or if you're ok paying for the appraisal, can't they just take it out of what price you agree on?
Many new domainers will be seduced by the possibility of a fast profit (which is 100%, by all means possible in this industry - I've earned ROI's of over 8,000% in a matter of weeks), and buy the appraisal without thinking twice. Don't do it.

Thanks everyone! It's nice to feel welcome. Maxwell, you're very generous. I will heed your advice. I've been good about buying .com, .net, or .org. Mostly .coms. I have a question about brandable domains, but I'll start a thread for that. Some of my domains are privacy protected -- I'll chalk that up to an early learning experience!
