    How to find IDN names?

Is there a central place to go ot multiple places to go to find idn names.

Meaning if I have the word money and I want a bunch of IDN's in different languages that mean money, where would I go to find what IDN 's mean money so I would know what to try to register?

    I hope that made sense.

    - grab a translator. A few that I've used:

    http://www.systranet.com/systran/net
    http://babelfish.altavista.com/
    http://google.com/translate

Then translate whatever you're looking for from English to the language in which to target your IDN.

For argument's sake, 'money' in Japanese would be お金

    - cut and paste the term and enter it into an IDN-enabled registrar like domainsite.com, dd24, enom

Voila -- domainsite will show the equivalent punycode as well as unicode and indicate whether or not the term is available to be registered or not.

    お金.com is not available.

If you want to do a Whois lookup, you can only use the punycode of お金.com = xn--t8jw050a.com

This shows that http://www.whois.sc/xn--t8jw050a.com was registered in June 2004.

    Hope this helps...

This does exactly what you want :
    http://www.ectaco.co.uk/English-Mult...age-Dictionary

You submit an english word and it gives the translation for 25 languages.

Does anyone have any idea of how many IDN's have been registered by major country, or even in total? Any idea how many ascii sites are out there? Just wondering.

and http://www.iask.com/ for your chinese needs and http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/cgi-lo...een/wwwjdic?1C for japanese.

These specific dictionaries are in general better then the multi-lingual translators, you have to remember that there might be several translations for the same english word, one of which is the "right" (or popular) translation.

    Very cool stuff! Thanks.

But I must add: If you got a translation of a very popular keyword and check it with Whois and the word is still available, then the dictionary must be wrong because IDN domainers can't be wrong

It's a bit late for 1st grade IDN domains now.

IDN are hot commodity right now
there are some tools that might help you as punycode converter, bulk whois and overture checkers that can be found on www.idnpros.com or in idntools.net
There are also some forums to find good drops, such as idnpros.com and idnforums

Last month lot of gold IDN where gone, but you still have lot of them
If you need some help just pm me, as owner of one of the forums i can help a bit!

Re: How to find IDN names?

I tend to do things a bit differently.

Take the example of Japanese. I visit Japanese portals eg.
    http://www.excite.co.jp/
    http://www.yahoo.co.jp/
    http://www.dmoz.org/World/Japanese/
    etc.

I explore their directory sections (even if you can't read the language, with a bit of hunting you should be able to find which bits are the directory because they look "directory-ish" in any language. cut and paste the category and subcategory names into a file, clean the file up by removing all the junk (change any punctuation to a newline by searching for it and replacing it with "^p" in word, delete brackets, delete all numbers etc.) and then I bulk check the resulting list of names after converting it to Punycode.

At that point, I have my starting list of "candidate domains". I then start working through it, testing the domains in Overture and Google. Domains with very low results, I ignore. Those with better scores I go on to plug into a couple of dictionaries, and I also look more closely at the Google results to see if it looks like the term is generic or the exact name of some large company's site.

If you need to find a starting point, search (in English) for things like "largest Japanese search engines", "biggest Japanese portals" etc. - generally somebody somewhere has made a blog or forum post summarising the likely candidates.

Other sources of word lists include shopping sites (pick a term like "computer hardware", find the translation, and Google around until you find some ecommerce sites and you should pretty soon have a nice tidy list of keywords relating to computer hardware).

The most important expression you should learn in any language is "Site Map". In Japanese, it's "サイトマップ". If you learn to recognize that expression in every language that interests you, you can very quickly get a page that is usually a text representation of the site, and from there you can often get a ton of keywords, again even if you can't read the language.

Another trick: Search Google for "inurl:keyword" where "keyword" is an English word you're interested in, e.g. "chair". Then hit the Advanced Search link to the right of the Search box and select the option to limit your results to the language you're interested in. That will turn up pages in that language, with the keyword in the URL. Foreign language sites have quite often made use of English (up until now) in the URL i.e. in the page name or the directory name, so they might have a page www.site.com/chair.html where all the content is about chairs.

Sounds like more work this way, but on balance it's quicker if you want to reg a LOT of IDNs rather than just one or two. I can probably find 30 "candidates" I like enough to register in an hour or so. And because I've used the work of a native speaker to begin with (those compiling the directories speak the language) there's relatively little danger of an accidental typo. It also means that you're not limited by a "failure of imagination" since the dictionary approach limits you to whatever you think of and pop into the translation box, whereas the above techniques trawl with a much larger net.
JapaneseDomains.com - cheap .jp registrations, English language interface, no local presence required. Alphabetic & IDN names supported. Bulk pricing available.

Hi....I translated using Google the word sex in Chinese...

    got this:

性别 but why if I try to translate it back to English I don`t get back the word sex but the word gender ?
I tried other words and same issue.
    I`m confused.
    Thanks

To get terms like this you really need to know how to generate the characters before anyone else does. You might get their in Mongolian, but not Chinese. Those kinds of opporunities went ages ago! If you could get the equivalent of Gender, you would be doing very well!

If you are after top terms, it will be a matter of approaching existing owners with substantial offers. If you could get them to sell at realistic prices then this would be a sound investment, but we are already talking at least 5 figures!

of course I knew that....I used the most common word just for example.

Still my question is there. I used a popular translator. But I don`t know if it works corretly.

If it is a very newly developed Unicode Script then it really is a wing and prayer. Best you can hope for is a bit of Google really.
