Yes, most of us had to go to/start other forums to compensate for the lack of discussion in this area of domains.
Things are progressing well in the IDN field. Just not here. It's a shame too.

Barely 3 months ago you could register good IDN .com's, now it is getting hard to find decent .nets. Rolling thru names on the whois.com register, it's looking like a Goldrush of International domainers moping up key words and generics in every major language. Definate impact in languages of Japan, Korea, Russia, and China. Amazingly not many being put up for sale...
Yes, Dave was ranting on IDNs on DNF around September/October, his posts caught my attention and while people were criticizing him like mad, I immediately acted on it.
In the past, Windows only had an English version, and who would have thought that the Japanese now use Japanese Windows and the Chinese use Chinese Windows. IT is localizing all the time - the process has repeated itself at least 10 times the past 60 years from punchcard machines to mainframes to word type-writer word processors, to .......
Even a 5 year old can understand this.
Same with me as I'm disappointed there is no discussion on IDN's..... Why buy a hot ascii name for a few K's when many hot IDN's are available for reg fee?
I don't think many people realize that there are hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of "foreign" language websites out there today. Currently you have to access them with an ascii "English language" url. But that is all about to change, and you can bet that the 85% of the world that doesn't speak any English is going to choose their native script for their urls. And why not, they can even remember the words in their own language! As described today by Big Dave...there is an entire "parallel universe" of websites out there that most ascii domainers don't even realize exists.
WANT TO SEE: Plug the Japanese word for GOLD into google search: 金
How about 563,00,000 million mentions, all in foreign language! Pop open a few of those websites for some interesting fun....now imagine that the entire universe of urls and domain names were in THEIR language (Japanese for instance). You'd be waiting for English to roll around as anxiously as they are waiting for their native scripts to be implemented as well. Welcome to the world of IDNs.
You're getting so many mentions for 金, because 90% of them are from Chinese websites, and 金 is actually the Chinese/Japanese version of the Korean surname, "Kim" - yes, the most common Korean surname (probably >10% of Koreans use that surname), and also the surname of the DPRK dictator. And in many Asian languages, the word "gold" and "golden" is the same, so any term with the word "golden" in it will be included.

The point was not why "金" was just popular or even what sites it took you to, but to give Forum members the opportuntity to SEE for themselves some of the "International Language" websites. Once you start to realize that the entire International Internet world is in foreign script- except for the urls.....your realize that there will no doubt be a rapid shift to IDNs. I just recently got interested, and got my eyes get opened to a whole new world of domaining. Doesn't mean anyone has to get onboard, just enjoy seeing what is coming to the internet around the world.
There are millions of International Language Websites already in place...and they are waiting for IE7 to allow them to change their urls into "thier" languages and scripts to match "their" websites no doubt. I also found it fascinating to see the website designs....the colors, layouts and art, particularly some of the Chinese. Simply eye opening for most....this is what has been well coined by Big Dave as the "parallel universe" of domaining. Just pop 金 into your google bar for a little lookie.
