Is it ok to ask someone to type in punycode?!

Who here thinks it's ok to invite someone to type in the punycode, on an IDN?

If the IDN is letter or number-based (like an ascii domain) then you have the choice of giving them the original unicode or the puny.. But many of you out there with symbol names (that can't be typed in naturally) you only really have the punycode option or you ask them to type ALT +whatever.

How many of you (especially with symbols) think this isn't a problem?

    Regards

The only people who need to use Japanese language domains are Japanese people. I can't find a single Japanese person without the capability to type in Japanese. So actually no I don't see the problem you are talking about. Am I missing your point?

If you are trying to refer an english speaker without IME or similar capability to type in say Japanese, I can just give you a link with the symbols but the url is in punycode: セフレ.net

    Exactly, wrdekle

I was reading an article this morning and it said that the literacy rate in Japan is 99%. Literacy is taken very highly in Japan and pretty much the whole country knows japanese unlike in other countries where a few languages can dominate.

Japanese will just type the URL in unicode. They won't bother with the puny.

    Hi guys,

This question has nothing to do with Japanese
IDN, but thanks for your comments anyway.

    Regards,
Sorry I thought your question pertained to IDN? Japanese IDN are a subset of IDNs as a class and what applies to Japanese IDN is in many instances representative of IDNs as a whole. My larger answer being that most native speakers of a language will have a means to type in their own language, thus with IDNs you should never need to ask native speakers to type-in punycode. Symbol domains are a bit trickier, but my personal feeling is that their value lies in the exclusivity factor, that is, how difficult it is to find and type in that symbol in the first place.

Great answer, thanks very much. I realised
afterward that my question was probably a
little confusing and I should have referred to
'symbols' directly (since that was really the
    thrust of my question).

Many 'dingbat' type domains are certainly
attractive and I have seen on this forum many
high 'valuations' relating to them... The simple
truth for most of these names, however, is that
they are wholly untypeable and so their value
can only be considered on the basis of them
    being theoretical domains (unchartered territory
    for all of us!).

At present, I can not even see a future for them
in terms of 'branding' and 'owning' the graphical
representation of the symbol (incl. domain) as
they are really only identifiable in terms of their
    punycode reference...

Anyway, if anyone disagrees with me on this then
please post your comments in this thread... i'd love
to know your thoughts on how non-typeable symbol
domains will (or may) become valuable either now or
    in the future.

    Regards,

(Oh, and what you feel will be the best way of
    accessing them...).

for the dingbat domains give the person the punycode or link to it on your website.
