    Re: 伊.net Italy.net Japanese

Someone please ban Trentino.... He is trying to get us to buy fake translations.

Trentino maybe its time to get a native speaker instead of relying on babelfish which in this case is WRONG. I do not see one result on google that shows that this is Italy..... or even on google images.....

but with the other term sarcle mentions I see tons.......
Perhaps you need to stop relying on google and start relying on someone that speanks the language... this is ITALY in Kangi.... if google is your translator, than you are highly mistaken my friend... can a native speaker PLEASE confirm what I am saying so Jeff can stop harassing me on the forum... because last time I checked, Jeff was not Japanese or have ever been to Japan... and I stand by my post until a mod can give this guy some warning points for harrasing me about a language he knows nothing about.

No your comments on Trentino is probably wrong. He often teach people on the correct usage of foreign usage. I trust him.

I believe this time he have just been treated by the "realiable" translator he has. Kind of ... lost in translation

BTW, the word Trentino had always mentioned - "Kangi" (probably Kanji?) means "漢字" or "かんじ" - Chinese characters. I mentioned it's not Chinese either because I recognize it's Chinese Kanji, just give my two cents, sorry if wrong..

Meanwhile, as the meaning is not yet clarifed, i suggest holding-up the sale thread for the sake of buyer's interest.

    Re: 伊.net Italy.net Japanese

Looks like the problem (and confusion) stems from the fact that "伊" means Italy in certain limited circumstances when it's used in a compound form with other Kanji characters. For example "日伊" (Japan and Italy - used for cultural exchange meetings between the 2 countries)

On the other hand, when the expression is used on a stand-alone basis i.e. to refer to the country itself, "イタリア" is used.

If you check the JP Overture keyword suggestion tool for "伊" and look at the top 100 results, then check Overture for "イタリア", the latter turns up references to the language, trips to Italy, maps of Italy, italian brands, etc. whereas nothing like that shows up for "伊".

    Re: 伊.net Italy.net Japanese

These terms were made during world war 2. Just like Baseball was terned into a Japanese term.
All countries have a Japanese name with Kanji.
Only the ones for England & America is still actively used.
Mostly business & official news etc.
    So it is correct.

Thanks unregistered, Jeff and everyone for the help, but nontheless, It seems like I'm having some problems with my Japanese understanding and it's being very problematic on the forum please believe it's not intentional. No one wilfully screws up his rep. So if anyone knows the best route I can go about confirming names in my portfolio please let me know. I will withhold posting Japanese names until my portfolio is confirmed for the sake of not getting everyone wild up. Thanks again guys. Any advice or sugestions, post here or pm me.

In Chinese,伊 may be abbreviation of 伊朗(Iran) or 伊拉克(Iraq).
In Chinese,伊 does not mean Italy.

Maybe you guys who are native speakers or who have a solid understanding of the language like Edwin or any other language could start a translation service on here for DNF or soemething. A) People like me would benefit from it alot B) It would help situations like this or make then place c) People would be able to get some DNF or a few bucks from a bulk translation. And next to every name the seller could post something like: "伊朗.com verified by JaneDoe". What do you guys think. A sort of unofficial verification service for languages on here?

    Re: 伊.net Italy.net Japanese

One idea: if you can find multiple "versions" of a word (for example, it should be VERY easy to find the correct version of "Italy" even if you can't read Japanese, from directories, translation tools etc.) and there is a MASSIVE difference in Overture results between what you think is right and the other version, then you're almost certainly wrong. Or if you're checking what you would expect to be a very popular word and the Overture is very low, then you're almost certainly wrong.

Overture isn't the be all and end all - you'll miss a lot of things going by Overture alone - but it can certainly be used fairly effectively to sort out this kind of "is this translation logical?" question.

The most important thing is to try multiple ways to verify a name. Just because you can find some dictionary somewhere that defines a word a certain way, doesn't make it correct/common/in regular use. It could be an archaic or little-used form (like the word in this thread), a mistake in the dictionary (many online glossaries are built by volunteers and non-linguistic experts), an over-broad interpretation (e.g. equating gender to sex), a word that only works in COMPOUND expressions rather than on its own, and so on. So check across several dictionaries, look at OT results, look at Google results inside "" marks, etc.

If all sources of info agree, you may have a winner.

If most sources of info disagree with the one that has the "desirable" transaction, you're most likely wrong.

伊 means "He" in old Chinese usage. Nice name!

    From NJStar Chinese WP:

伊[Yi]: He or She; [Yi] Surname.
