Follow the Money...ICANN 2009 Budget for Rollout of IDN$

Follow the money thru the ICANN budget. No doubt that the train is soon leaving the station for those that have ignored opportunities in the IDN niche.

http://www.icann.org/planning/ops-bu...amework-09.pdf

Strategic Priority Three year deliverables
1. Implement IDNs and new gTLDs
a. Complete the policy process for IDN ccTLDs associated with the ISO 3166-1 two-letter codes (IDNC) domains within this plan period, and support the fast track process with a goal to get first country code IDNCs in the root by late 2008/early 2009.
b. Implement the first of the new generic TLD strings in the root by late
2008/early 2009.

The plan framework paints the picture of an ICANN of the future that has:
• rolled out hundreds of new operational TLD’s including IDN TLD’s;
• achieved significant progress on all of the strategic initiatives;
• and remained financially stable.
The three-year budget model provides a focal point for discussing and answering the many new gTLD and IDN questions such as timing, fees, risks, and market demand that the community should consider.

Worth the read IMO. This represents the 2009 budget which also includes the budgeted funding for the rollout of idn.idn and also includes the new gTLDs for the various idn.idn languages. The total budget for this in 2009 appears to be allocated at $ 14,328,000. That does not include the money that the various registrars in the dozens of languages will be spending on top of this. Seems pretty good indication that ICANN is finally going to push ahead next year with their plans for .idn implementation.
