I dont think that there are any risks.
but as for one risk, if you cancel a .jp name, it takes time for the .jp registry to delete your information. That is all that I know of that and i own several. .jp names are mostly used for mobile devices and slowly moving towards .mobi
hope that helps

why .mobi for japan? why won't .jp works?
Actually I've seen a couple .mobi style layouts in the .jp extension. Many phones already have the .jp added when you search.
All prices are valid for 72 hours.
So far no downside risk that I am aware of from owning .jp. It is pretty straightforward and trading .jp is definitely enabled which helps liquidity if you need to sell.
Should clarify my viewpoint from someone else' post above. Most .jp are NOT used for mobile phones although there are some .jp mobile sites. Most existing developed .jp sites are developed with pc in mind. Mobile sites are definitely more important in Japan than the US though. I think that a guy named Mobile Developer might know better than I do but as for myself, I doubt there will be any serious adoption of .mobi in Japan. What would the value proposition be - "Hey look even more ascii letters for you to type!"
how about porn type .jp sites?...they also seem to be worth$
any thoughts?
yes they are
oh. Sorry about that.![]()
I should not say most. Typically .jp are used for mobile sites rather than coms FOR MOBILE sites. Some have even gone as far as .am, .ag, .in! There are a few .mobi sites in Japan. If you need a list, i can give them to you. With the list of domain names growing using .jp, .com, they are slowly moving to .mobi. as for the big guys, they keep their .co.jp and .com; display their QRcode and "mail to mobile" form to get the link.
ANYWAYS.......
back to the original point, i have had no problem with .jp.![]()
