    Re: List your Russians!

зуб .com (tooth.com) - I think it is really good one!
    пиццерия .com (pizzeria.com)
евроокна .com (like euro windows - popular name for modern type of windows)
страховки .net (This name with .NET zone in Russian translates like "(There is) No Insurance" or "(I have) no insurance"- really good for russian ear).
страховки. com (insurance policy, plural )
билетов .net (tickets.net, with .NET it is like "no tickets")
билета .net (ticket.net, with .NET is is like "no ticket")

I am an amateur in domain name business, and for me it is very interesting how much can I get for these domains from ressellers.

All these domains sounds really good and natural in Russian (it is my mothertongue)

Nice domains. You should wait until IE7.

The .NET domains are interesting, but you would have trouble selling to someone who is not Russian. I have a few of these kind of domains myself.

Russia is proud. Russia is making noise. She wants to be respected like the Chinese. Russia is back on the world stage. That is good for the world. Russia has much to offer as a friend, ally, and trading partner.

I think that China would be more likely to separate than Russia. However, it would help isolate them. That would not be prudent in a global economy.

I also believe that Chinese and Russians are very good at 'getting around' this sort of thing.

Finally.... Is this possible? Yes. Likely? Probably not.

It does help those with Cyrillic/IDN domain names aimed at Cyrillic readers. It helps promote awareness of Russian language domains. It also may hurt those with English/ASCII domain names aimed at Russians. In the long run, we can only guess.

    yes agreed.

however, they are saying if it happens, they will have a cyrillic or chinese extension, depending on the country obviously.
which kind of makes sense if they're gonna do i guess.
dunno where it would leave the current idns before it get really gets going.
have looked a little at this market but i have never even seen one promoted when i have been in ukraine. every domain advertised is english language letters. on hoardings, tubes you name it, which is why i am very sceptical of idn

These are all separate issues. The article cited referred to a separate internet - as in isolated. This probably won't happen.

Regarding domains and advertising.... I am not sure where you are browsing, but I see domain names advertised in native script (Cyrillic, Japanese, etc.) much much more often than ASCII. Especially Russian. Ukraine may be less likely. http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/6...2b3e4cbbp9.jpg

The ICANN plan is to use IDN.IDN for ccTLD and then gTLD. It has already been tested and is moving forward (see test strings at http://idn.icann.org/):

    http://مثال.إختبار
    http://παράδειγμα.δοκιμή
    http://उदाहरण.परीक्षा
    http://例え.テスト
    http://실례.테스트
    http://مثال.آزمایشی
    http://пример.испытание
    http://உதாரணம்.பரிட்சை
    http://בײַשפּיל.טעסט

China and Russia have been upset because the movement to this has been slow in the past. Russia is already planning on implementing its IDN .ccTLD this year. Others will follow suit.

IDNs already receive type-in traffic, so we know they can and will be used. However, the ccTLD vs gTLD issue, IDN or not, is an important one for .fr, .com.br, .jp, .ru, .cn, and a host of others. The existing ccTLD is usually a force to be reckoned with. However, dot com is always a strong competitor.

Domains are a speculative investment. You can't win if you don't play.

    Thanks.
    really interesting stuff.
tbh i have considered idns for a while but it seems so damn confusing lol
so many different options and if it goes idn.idn (which makes sense) then i dont have enough knowledge of the languages so will leave well alone.

when i am in ukraine in internet cafes they have the combined keyboards, so cyrillic on one half of key and english letter on rest.
they tend to visit english word .ru or com sites or .com.ua the most and then once in sites use cyrillic or english. i have genuinely never seen an idn advertised.

the one thing i dont get, and this is just genuine question, not a knocker.
it is, if someone on a cyrillic keyboard wants to visit cyrillic code. cyrillic extension , they just type that in .yeah?

cos the one thing i've never understood or believed is this xz---jg. etc.
is that just for someone with an english keyboard to view?

anyway, this is definitely a market that will be big, its whether the countries will go with the idn extension or the .com etc. imo
anyway, i need to do some reading up when i get chance
    cheers

I understand what you mean. All I can say is that I see the Cyrillic or Arabic or Japanese domain names in my browser as long as I have that selected as a language in Internet Explorer. I hear that Opera works well for IDN, too.

Anyway, most of my Cyrillic traffic is from Ukraine, a lot from Russia, too. I am not sure how they type it in.... They just do? Somehow, visitors from Ukraine & Russia get to Вероника.com, Даша.com, Стратегии.com, Груз.com and a hundred others and they create a little revenue each day.

You can always go after Scandinavian, French, German, etc. domains. I have found that Swedish IDN.se (ccTLD) don't do as well as the same domain name in dot com. Swedish IDN.se cost about $USD 20 and make less revenue than $8 IDN.com. Dot com gets very good Swedish traffic. However, German IDN.de gets better traffic than German IDN.com. It depends on the market.
