    888

    Hi,
I have been offered US$12k for the domain name 888 in the new mobile domain name extension, mobi, and was wondering what people thought about what the domain is worth?

Should I sell it at this stage for 12k or it is likely to be worth a lot more in the future.

    Appreciate your thoughts/comments.

    Cheers.

    HOLD ON BABY ..... Thats a keeper !!!! ( for the moment ! )

If mobi does not take off at all , its still worth 12k ... if .mobi works at all.. start doubling ... Very desirable IMO.

Agreed. Personally, I think .mobi will be THE extension for companies to use to allow mobile phone users to get the best possible experience for their website. If this happens, your name will be worth 2-3x that offer. If it does not, the $12k is probably a good price.

If it were me, I would tell them you intend to develop it as the extension takes off. If it takes off, you should be able to make much more. If not, you can use it for your clothing line.

Take care over the landing page. It says 'have your say and win'. I don't know but maybe that's a bit too close for comfort to the other 888. If I were you I would just put clothing on the site.

If .mobi flies, this name is gold. Isn't 888 a toll free phone prefix? Great gambling numbers as well. Very easy to remember. I would hold out for 5 to 10 times their offer. No joke. But that's me. What do you need for this name? If you are pleased with their offer - take it.

    Re: 888

888 is a magic number - I own 888网.com (888 Net -Chinese) for which I expect to see some big offers when IDN takes off.

.Mobi is an unknown quantity , however, if you do not need the money -hold.

    Good luck

    Thanks for all your comments.

As it happens I have turned down the offer of 12k and will continue with my plans to develop it myself and see what happens with .mobi in 2007.

    Cheers.

    Re: 888

You know, i wouldn't do anything or count my money until Jan 1, 2007. I have a trademarked mobi name and I wanted to change the nameservers to develop my mobi site. However, I should have put the correct nameservers in right from the purchase because i can't touch them now until next year. I complained about this on the blog, and the response will be below. Basically, even though you own the name, it can still be contested. So, I would just hold it and see.

Here's the response to my nameserver question:

All domains and associated contacts created in the dotMobi registry during the trademark sunrise registration period are automatically “locked” upon creation. This means that the domain name and the associated contact and nameserver information cannot be modified, renewed, deleted or transferred. This is designed to preserve information about the registrants and their trademark data, and allow potential challengers to review sunrise registrations and challenge them during trademark Sunrise Challenge Period that began August 28th and runs until December 15th, 2006.

A name registered during trademark sunrise will be unlocked if someone files a Sunrise Challenge and WIPO determines a legitimate registrant for the domain name, or if no party challenges the domain name. Again the Sunrise Challenge Period ends on December 15, 2006. Please note that after December 15th dotMobi has the right to challenge additional names. Therefore, you should assume that any Sunrise domain name may remain locked until the end of 2006.

Your registrar should have notified you of all terms and conditions when you submitted your registration application. You may still associate a live web site at any time with your current registration provided that it meets with the simple requirements as outlined in our Switch On! Guide. You may be able to work with your registrar or Hosting provider to put up a live site using your current nameserver information. I would suggest speaking with either of them.

Finally, please note that any names registered beginning with our Land Rush period on September 26th and subsequent General Registration period will NOT be locked, so you will be free to modify, transfer, renew and delete as needed according to our terms and conditions.
    -------------------

I would hold it and remember that 888 is considered a very lucky number in Chinese. There was a domain dispute because Victor Chandler bought Victor888 and 888 casino complained that the use of 888 is a lucky number...
Read the whole case here: http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/d...2004-0753.html

But, the snippet about 888 is this:
    The Use of “888”

The Respondent says that, to Chinese people, “888” is a lucky number. In support of that proposition the Respondent has produced an article entitled “Feng Shui and Chinese Numerology”, downloaded on October 11, 2004, from a website at “www.feng-shui-architects.com”. That article refers to the number 8 as standing “for potential and for growth: a change from bad luck to good luck. Eight also stands for the 8 trigrams (Bagua) – an auspicious symbol of transformation. …In business, where the aim is to grow and make a profit, the three digit numbers like 328 and 888 are very popular with the Chinese because they sound the same as “business will easily prosper” and “thrice prosperous” [in Chinese]. Generally three digit numbers are preferred over two or four digits because 3 is a yang number and it stands for “liveliness” or “san” in Cantonese.

Other material produced by the Respondent makes it clear that “888” is indeed regarded as a lucky number by many Chinese people. A Media Release issued by the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in October 2000, opened with the words: “‘888’ is a very lucky number in Chinese meaning making a huge fortune! The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) today celebrates the 888th exhibition since its opening in 1988 with the lucky winner —— the 9th Hong Kong International Toys and Gifts show ….”

The Respondent has also referred to a series of advertisements run by the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation, featuring the value of the local knowledge HKSBC claims to have in its various markets. One such advertisement produced by the Respondent features numbers which are said to be unlucky in Japan and the United Kingdom (4 and 13 respectively), and a lucky number in China – 888.

    -------------------

So, you may have a lot more endusers then you had orignally thought.

    Congrats!

No, I will wait and see what develops with .mobi next year, as given the companies behind it there is a high chance it will fly...especially with the significance of 888 in Asia which is becoming a huge market for mobiles and particularly the internet over mobiles.

    Thanks for your interest.

    Cheers

If the nameservers are locked I would suspect it would be difficult to sell the domain without selling your entire company?

    Correct.

And although I did solicite your opinions I have no intention of selling this domain untill I have developed it to the best of my ability as originally intended.

    Time will tell.
