Numerics in China's Alexa Top 100

Thought it would be interesting to tally up how many there are and what types they are, and hopefully in the future do a scarcity/popularity analysis like Sevent did regarding the Alexa top 500.

Two are NN.com's (51.com #4 and 56.com #7)
Three are NNN.com's (163.com #9 and 126.com #56)
One is an NNNN.com (9158.com #68)
Three are NNNNN.com's (12530.com #26, 96333.com #34, and 17173.com #100)
And four have other extensions (6.cn #11, 39.net #41, 5460.net #84, and 163888.net #92).

So 13 are pure numerics, and a bunch of others have numbers in them.

Good to see folks are doing more analysis of numerics. I'm particularly surprised at how many 5N's you found in the top 100. Have you posted your results to your blog yet?

By my count there are about 250,000 pure numeric domain names registered (out of about 100 million total for gTLD's), so pure numerics represent 0.25% of the total namespace. Yet you found they make up 13% of the Top 500 websites in China (or 12% discounting the one .cn). Very nice!

I'm going to post it to the blog today probably. These are actually just the top 100, there are probably many more numerics in the Top 500 Chinese sites. How did you get your 250k count?

I scanned the zone files with a php-script that extracted only pure numerics. Zone files tend to miss a lot, so I rounded up based on what seemed reasonable. I would guess the true count for gTLD's is between 230k and 270k.

I see you got the post up to the blog. Cheers!

Thanks, two other updates on the blog are that the CEO of Proxiti (French company that owns 6,000 NNNNN.info domains representing French postal codes) wrote in, and a Hong Kong stock exchange announced it is using 5-digit codes for derivative warrant products on the exchange. So, lots going on in the NNNNN world. Also, I saw a lot of good numeric sales this week on dnjournal:

1018.com sold for $5,050 at NameJet.

494.net ($1,900), 458.net ($1,750) sold at Afternic

5080.mobi ($1,000) at Sedo
