Register Today on DNForum IT'S FREE!i was pondering numeric domains today and i thought of this question. since one of the points about the validation and justification for numeric domains is that they numbers can spell words on your phone pad, .. i got to thinking that all but the most basic phones will soon have qwerty keypads, so why would typing in the number that spells a domain be a valid part of the argument for numeric domains?
i'm not saying they dont have value. i think they have great value. but i see people saying things like 72789 spells PARTY. while i think the 5N.com does have value, there should be little to no justification based on what it spells on a phone. all mobile devices are getting more integrated to the point that anyone using them to access the web will most certainly have qwerty keypads to do so. the point is a red herring

All I can say is it annoys the hell out of me when I see an advertisement like 1-800-call-now and then I have to figure out the numbers when dialing. I would rather just have the number. This is the same reason I don't do texting. If someone sends me a text they either get ignored or a phone call back. With that said I would much rather type in 23456 than I would like trying to figure out how to get to the site via a regular phone pad. But as far as numbers go they are limited to 0-9 and while advertising you may as well just have any old number combination. And you can only go so far with the numbers before they get annoying. If you're making it spell something and advertise it all you can advertise is the number or you just piss people like me off.

well if you said that when advertising you may as well have any old number combination, and that the words are irrelevant to you, then the fact that 2255669.com spells CALLNOW on a phone is still irrelevant to you. so then may point is the same. that the numbers spell anything on a touchtone keypad is of no inherent value.

Perhaps one day , the numbers from 0-9 will also represent different internet extensions ? so after you type in 4636 (info) .info , then press an internet icon , and then the number from 0-9 .......depending what extension you want , so 4636.info maybe is 4 6 3 6 , then hit internet icon and decide extension from 0-9 (your favorite extensions) perhaps .info is number 4 , .org is number 5 and so on
i have 4636.info !!! (info.info) ...... words are handy
I don't think qwerty keypads will overcome numeric keys.
The vast majority of 10-30 year olds are far more adept just using their thumb to text, than they are at typing; they can do it with one hand; they can do it in the dark, say in a club; it's more compact; there are lots of relevant points in favour of numeric keypads.

I hear what you're saying but i disagree. My LG is only slightly larger than the last phone i had taking up little more space in my front pocket, and i can text three times faster when i flip up the qwerty than i can on the outside numerical keypad. texting on the keypad is now comparatively clumsy to me. furthermore, if anyone can learn to text in the dark on a numerical pad they can easily learn same on a qwerty keypad.
just imagine if you had to limit yourself to navigating the internet right now from only your number keys on your keyboard?
