This website discusses the names of websites. A domain name is a hierarchy system which is used for various services on the internet. If you need a humane address on internet other then numbers you need to register a domain name for various services like www, ftp, email etc.
A domain name works as a home address and various services work as rooms in a home. Like www. is used with a prefix with domain name to check the pages in a website.
