Dropped out of College to Domain instead

    Hi guys,

I just dropped out of college to get into domaining. I had over a year left in my degree - could not see where it was leading - and so opted for domaining.

I've got some $ to invest in .TV names (since it's probably too late to get involved in the .com boom)

    Two quick questions...

    1. Anyone written an ebook on .TV domaining I can buy?

    2. .TV domain registration for under $20? (I can't find it)

    Thanks guys,

    Andrew

    Welcome to the community!

    1) It is NEVER too late to get into the .com "boom", even if you buy domains second hand. Invest in tools (search these forums for "Domain Research Tool").

    2) Don't bother with ebooks, most of them aren't worth it and there is plenty of information here for the price of membership plus many industry leaders and experts here willing to share their vast knowledge.

    Good luck and welcome!

    1. Go back to college, all while indulging in domains.
    2. Stay away from .tv domains

Draggar - Thanks for the encouragement. I'll probably buy the Domain Research tool.

Acroplex - Hopefully, I can finish my degree online. Anyone here done that?

Ditto. Go back to college! Work into the domaining thing slowly, you can easily spend all your money part time

Get back in college, finish your last year and then decide if you want to go into domaining.

RichInCollege and South - Thanks for the warnings about .TV

And regarding "part time" domaining vs "full time" domaining - how long did it take you guys to make enough $ to justify doing it full time?

Even if you don't go back to college (which you should), at least get some training on web design and/or Hosting / graphic design. There are many ways to make money online, not just buying & selling the names. A consistent income from affiliate or adwords sites is a good thing too, and a developed site with traffic & income will sell for more than just a name.

    More like:

"To make a small fortune in domaining first you'll need a large fortune".

    (or a LOT of luck).

Get your degree and learn some web development, even if it is basic (like the general consensus here).

Buy a laptop and go back to school - you can do college and school at the same time.

I have 256 things going on now. You don't have to quit one to do the other one. Especially college.

Never drop out with 1 year left...you just wasted either 2 or 3 years of your life if so.

You can use the degree to get yourself a decent job so you can at least afford to be a domainer. A broke domainer won't be very successful.

    Good luck to you.

    yes, it takes money...

One of the mistakes I made (and most noobs make) is buying a whole lot of domains cheap, either from drops or hand regging because you do not want to spend a lot of money on a name...

So, you end up with 100 names worth reg fee when you could have spent $700 or so on a decent name or two that make $$ then maybe sell up, buy a few more, etc... However, even this model will take years to pay off...

Honestly, to really get to the point when you can make a living off of domaining you would likely need at least 1 years tuition money (I am thinking $10,000+) to get started, and even then you are going to have to make smart investments, have patience, live like a pauper, etc...

    Just my $0.02

    Good Luck!

    I agree with this too

Be advised that domaining is not a get-rich-quick scheme. There are some good opportunities left for sure, but there is a learning curve too.
    Besides:
    1. It's never too late to invest in .com
    2. Don't believe the hype and believe you will make fortune in lesser extensions
    3. .tv is not selling like hot cakes really (imho: forget it...)
    4. All in one I think you really need to reconsider your plans or you are going to get badly burnt

Before you jump in, make sure you have a real job or a steady stream of income so you can indulge in the domaining as a hobby at first, as a trade if all goes well and in due time.
