I received this answer today:

Hi, I'm not interested in paying a lot to recover the domain. It
was my domain, which I lost because the registrar did not follow
correct procedure, and I intend to take the matter to dispute
resolution. Of course, I would buy you another domain of your
choice to compensate.

The domain itself is not terribly valuable to me, its main use
was for having email addresses to register on dubious websites.
It was an easier to understand version of my main domain (0--0 or
Zero Minus Minus Zero).

Alex

Why not just give it to him to be nice. The domain is worth $0 anyways.

The words 'of your choice' seem very generous here. Presumably he means one that is free to reg rather than one on the open market.

I'm still confused, though. If this guy's domain was dotcom, how can Tord's dotorg be involved?

Sorry, however I don't agree

Firstly, the domain is worth around $50.

Secondly, whether the domain is worth $5 or $5,000, you shouldn't really (from a business perspective) give away domains for free, surely?

I wouldn't personally have asked for $3k (because the domain, as you pointed out, isn't worth anywhere near that), however it doesn't make sense to just give it away for free. Request a fair price, and (if met), sell it.

(Plus the name information does not add up to the domains he listed for appraisals).

But, it seems that TordB does own the .org according to the Whois information.

Guys, you know that the domain in question in zmmz.ORG , right? I know this guy is pretty unclear with his questions, but as far as I've understood, he owns the .org and not the .com .. In other words; totally worthless reseller-wise...

Sometimes (yes, even in business) it pays off being nice, instead of being greedy just to make a few bucks. Judging from the potential buyer's reply, TordB will obviously not make a decent profit from this sale anyways, so he might as well give it to him, instead of asking for $10, $20 or whatever they end up agreeing on.

Yeah, after poking around it looks like he posted the .com (but was edited from the .org) and this is adding in some confusion.

Tord, please change your first post to zmmz (dot) org or something like that to eliminate some confusion.

IMO with the $3K offer, I'm sure he's out of even thinking of negotiating with you. That was WAY too high for a LLLL.org of that magnitude. More reasonable that he might have considered would have been maybe $100 and take offers over $40 (if you're lucky). Seems that the guy might have paid some money for it but not a lot.

I would request from the registrar the exact manner in which the drop was caused. Get verification from them nothing shoddy went on. if he ignored the notices and the decided he'd email his way out of it, let him offer. By threatening to take the dispute route, he is waving a threat flag IMHO.

So if I ask him for 50 bucks it would be fine? I realize that 3K was way too much now

Do I have to have a paypal account in order to receive the money? My paypal account doesn't work right now, but I will try to fix it tomorrow.

Stick it on TDNAM with a starting price of $50 and send him a link to the auction page so he can bid on it.

Either that or get a capture-all email account open for it to find out if the guys a sick puppy

Sounds to me like he was being reasonable right from the start. The poor dude lost it while it was at one of the worst registrars out there. You should have let him make you an offer to cover your time & effort and accepted it. Send him an email telling him you are sorry for being so greedy, and that you'd like to start the conversation all over from the beginning. What goes around comes around. It pays to be nice sometimes.

Just responded this way:

What about $55? I understand that you choose a bad place to register your domain and I feel sorry for you. Therefore, I will give you this special offer. However, if I don't hear anything within 3 days I have to let the domain go to someone else.

xxxx.

yeah thats a big difference. 3k to $55. personally i dont think 0--0.org looks that developed. i would tell him

I understand that the amount i quoted you may be a bit out of your reach. Would you mind sending in an offer?

----
if he low balls it
you could then ask for $100 and tell him that the lowest you can do. that will cover your reg fee and a little extra for your time.

if he sends in a better offer 100 + tell him
i think i can entertain your offer. Let me get final approval from my partner and then we can take care of the details.

This is the best advice IMO. Tor, you blew it by being so greedy the 1st time around. You hand registered it - nobody even put it on backorder. Now, you asked him for $55 after asking for 3K on top of giving him a deadline - you just look like a desperate greedy guy now. My guess is he'll dispute it now b/c you pissed him off.

Make nice and give him the domain back (after you verify his story). Ask for your registration fee back and leave it at that.

how does one set up a capture-all eMail account ??

Tord... did you google his eMail address and check to see if the domain was used for eMail spam etc... google zmmz see what turns up...

But I agree if sold -- about $50. would be fair between you two...
