I need a domaining mentor

LOL okay seriously I have bought a lot of generic names and ccc.com names lately but now that I'm seeing more nnn , lll.com , lll.net ln nl.net names I'm wanting to purchase at least my first lll.com! But heres the thing. I have no clue whats a good buy and what isn't! I can ask 5 people and get 5 different responses. So with that being said I need resources and places to read so I can determine this stuff for myself. I don't want to have to learn a very $$$ lesson.

Any suggestions on where to go to learn more about whats a good buy and what to stay away from?

What kind of names that wont lose value. That type of stuff. Thanks

okay to start with. When buying a LLL.com

what letters should I avoid? I have one that I want to buy but I want to make sure that its a good buy. That if I ever want to resell it or get rid of it I can at least make a small profit.

There is no bad or good letter.
Check google for acronyms.
Check TM (the majority of 3-letter names are potential for TM problem)

Buy it cheap and you will be sure to enjoy profit later.

Man, I wish I asked that question. I lost allot but people learn in different ways.

There are letters to avoid but the combination that exists does matter, so we say to avoid q,x,y,z but zip or yer dot com would be worth allot. So it's more important to avoid combos that have no benefit of any acronym association. I think if pm someone like Rock the name he will tell you if it's worth it and why. I recommend against telling everyone, just pick someone you can trust and this way too you will know if they jumped in and snagged it before you.

Happy hunting,

Paul

Let me give you some free advice that I've learned over the past year.

1) Very few people are willing to share all of their secrets unless you pay big (and if you can afford that, you can afford some good domains).

2) There is already a ton of information out there that is free and available. You just need to know where to look. Forums like this one are a great place to start. You have a gigantic jig-saw puzzle and a lot of the pieces are here, you just need to find them and figure out where they go in the giant puzzle. Learn who to listen to, who you'll need to weed out the BS, and who you need to completely ignore. Read, read, read. Just the information here (available to us for free) could be worth hundreds, if not thousands, if put together in an easy-to-read document (and if you'd do that, expect to be sued because a lot of people here don't like their work being sold).

3) Once you think you know it all, you realize you only know 1%.

4) Trial and error. You'll buy domains that are a flop. I've had to drop roughly 25-30 domains over the next few months because they were doing jack for me. It's better to let them drop than to continue spending reg fees on them. Hell, its better to sell them at a loss (reg fee is $7, sell them for $3-$5).

5) Read and learn.

6) Learn web design, programming, and SEO. Devoloped sites with traffic always sell for more than undeveloped / parked domains. If I got the domain ftra6urs.com up to 5,000 visitors a month plus good revenue from ads, it would sell for a hell of a lot more than most ccc.com domains.

7) Read and learn (and retain). Take notes if you need to.

8) Study what sells and for how much and where. A domain might fetch $100 here, $200 on Sedo, and $500 on EBay. PLus, what might sell on eBay for $50 might be junk elsewhere.

9) Read, learn, retain, take notes, and re-read.

Ah I so agree with all the above advice! Especially developping!

Cheers,

Rob

Yep read and learn.

Most important, before you buy anything make sure you've checked all the recent sales of similar domains to define the reseller price.

that is very good advice and really the best way to determine the value of any domain.
Right now any LLL.com is a good domain regardless of letters

Mel,

There are different investment philosophies when it comes to purchasing domain names. Some people would never entertain the idea of purchasing a "ccc.com" type name - others love flipping them. Spend some time reading, trying new things and seeing what works. Even with the best investment advice, at the end of the day it comes down to how much time and money you have and what you are prepared to risk.

Hope this helps.

Simon
