I think that all domains you've seen used to have good back links but lost them after some google updates. They still pave PR but no back links. On the next google update(if they stay undeveloped)they will lost the PR too.

I have about 12 blogs that shift indexing in Google like crazy. One week there will be 50 pages indexed in Google, the next 3, so days I'll have 5 links, some days I'll have none.
Also make sure you're check all forms of the domain name (www.domainname.com, domainname.com)
This can make a difference, no sure why?
