PayPal issue - DNForum - Domain Sales, Domain Forum, Domain Appraisals, Domain Registrars

Transferred domain to guy. He has them. He filed dispute requesting a refund. I will honor refund but if I accept the refund on paypal is their any protection for him to return the domain? Not sure how to handle it. The guy of course changed the servers and is profiting from the traffic while requesting refund, so don't really trust that much. Any advice would be appreciated.

Contact the registrar explaining what's about to happen: you'll get screwed.

Yep, I'd say there is a 99.9999% chance you are going to get screwed.

We need an escrow service for sales <$1,000.

One guy on another "crappy" domain forum scam me like this.
I write him 5 mails tell him I will call FBI.
The kid send me back the domain and never post anymore on that forum.

As I understand it, Paypal will not settle the dispute in his favor as it is not a tangible item at issue.

They will likely recommend you settle the matter with buyer and vice versa.

I may be wrong but in the past this was their stance.

In the future, it will help having a well thought out policy that stipulates no refunds or conditions for a full refund on your site that the buyer must agree to abide by. This will discourage scammers and will add to you case if an impartial third party must negotiate a dispute.

P.S. Don't give a refund, unless you get your domains back. State your case in the dispute console on Paypal and wait for Paypal's response.

You will lose. It happened to me a few times several years ago...One way to get your money back is to find this guy's actual home address and send him a package (empty box) with a different return address. Make sure that you send it express mail and get signature confirmation, once he signs for the box you provide that info to paypal saying that he "received" the item. It's one way to scam a scammer...it's worked for me several times, but you have to get all of that information before the deadline to respond to the dispute.

Almost assuredly the registrar will say they can only get involved with a court order.

You could try filing a small claims lawsuit locally which is very low cost and easy to do.

Thanks, interesting comments. The registrar doesn't seem able to assist and PayPal's policies seem as unsecure as Western Union with domains. I'll see how it plays out before I can comment more. Just dragging out at the moment.

If you don't respond to the dispute or only provide whois info and an explaination, you'll lose...been there.

This got resolved thankfully. I wrote up a written contract that I thought would secure myself and got my domains returned while he got his refund.
