What's a good rule of thumb on buying a domain?

I'm using the overture keyword search and I think I found a decent one that seems to be available for the time being. I've heard that if the keywords gets at least 10,000 searches a month then it is definitely worth purchasing a domain along those lines. Is this true?

also, let's say for example the keywords i liked were 'dvd rentals' ... now would the domain name have to be dvdrentals.com in order to get traffic? is the only way for people to find my site is if they manually type in my domain name? or do they find my domain name through search engines... i'm still kind of confused by that step.

Re: What's a good rule of thumb on buying a domain?

My first suggestion for Newbies is to stop trying to look into the past for good domains. Many people have been doing it for many years with sophisticated tools and programs. There is very little left in the past.

Start looking to the future, names that don't get traffic now but might get traffic in the future. New terms and technologies are developing every day. Watch and read the news with your eyes open for domain opportunities. You can be patient becuase if you miss an opportunity, another will come along tomorrow. 90% of what you register won't work out but hopefully the other 10% will make up for that.
For example, Nintendo announced that Wii will be the name of their next gaming consule. Check out the appraisal section for how many Wii names have been registered in the last 2 weeks. These are opportunities available to everyone, you don't need to be technologically sophisiticated.

    Best of luck,

    Duck

First try to understand what advertisers wants. They try to sell products anyway. And you have to count the demand and offer here. Then make your self a way to go. Luck is some part of this game. Try and see.

It will take lots of study and you have to be eager to learn always new developments in industry. Man can not go further without looking past failures.

Do you think domains with porn titles fetch more traffic?

I've seen posted here before that Adult domain traffic has very little value. Doesn't pay very well from my experience. I think the advertisers know that people will click through just to look at the pictures on the landing pages.

Stay away from the dirty' names for starters. Low PPC, and VERY hard to sell even with traffic.
