Question Why do good names drop?

I can't get my head around why some valuable names are allowed to drop. For example, vhq.com recently dropped and the bidding is currently at more than $5,000 in the auction at snapnames.

If the domain is worth so much, why do the previous owners allow them to drop? If they don't want them anymore, then why not sell them off for a quick few grand?

Anyone able to shed some light on this for me?

    to DNF!

    - They forget about them.
    - Their contact details have changed and don't update their profile; therefore, don't get expiring notices.
    - Don't realize what they have and just let them drop (not that common)
    - Person dies and names just expire

exactly. however, not aware of any public information released on the most common occurences i think forgetfullness plays the biggest role.

MySpaces.com dropped today -the pre-auction bid was $8k on Club Drop.

Good names expire mostly because the owner(individual or corporation) don't update their records (email address) and never receive the emails.

I know of an internet content publisher that failed to renew two cities after renewing them year after year. Staff transitions, being distracted with new projects, long list of reasons.

Re: Why do good names drop?

I let a 3 letter .com expire a few years ago for the same reason mentioned above (it was at a relatively unknown registrar as well). It was a lesson well learned though as I now keep an extensive record of all my domains at all times.

I think This one dropped because off his tm problems. Previous owner was a domainer.
