    Why register a ZERO?

Why do people register/buy domain names with a zero instead of an "o"? I'm pretty sure search engines don't substitute the zero for the "o", and trying to market it would be a pain, not to mention all the traffic that would be lost to the owner of the "real" name. And it's not like it's a common typo either.

    Just wondering...

    Re: Why register a ZERO?

I can only think it is to fool or scam people, having a URL that looks it is something else.

DNF0RUM.com looks pretty much like DNFORUM.com unless you look very hard.

I saw 83O.com at auction at enom the other day and I had to copy and paste it into word and change to lower case to make sure it wasn't 830.com

we used to talk about this years ago when greatdomains was a freeforall with tons of newbies buying domains, here is a story ,years ago I registered BL00D.com and put it there for $10k , within a day I got an offer for 5k , of course I refused the offer and removed the name from auction and let it expire , but it sure was chat room chatter!

    Well, you're a good guy.

I don't know if I would have listed that kind of name in the first place, but if I'd gotten an offer like that, I probably would have taken it. ;-)

    I registered one - STØP.com (ST0P.com)

I usually write a zero with a line through it at work to differentiate it from an O. It just seemed to fit with the word stop. I like the looks of it. Might have value, might not.

    Re: Why register a ZERO?

Oh , I guess it may have crossed my mind for a split second! just kidding ,no I could not do that. I just did it because it was the topic in the chat room at the time and some sellers were saying that nobody would bid , so curiosity I guess , no intention of selling it at all.

    Re: Why register a ZERO?

I've sold about 5 names for $100 bucks each with a zero in it, one was even a .us. Now, that you mentioned it, I've checked some of them out and a couple are developed sites...doesn't look like they're getting too much traffic though.

who would develop a domain with a "0"?

    Re: Why register a ZERO?

I think i have the best example of a developped site making money with a 0 !
It's an adult french site called p0rno.org
As you can see there's a 0 and it's .org lol
    Current overture on p0rno.org: 7205
    http://inventory.fr.overture.com/d/s...term=p0rno.org
    Current overture on porn0.org (misspelling) : 123
    http://inventory.fr.overture.com/d/s...term=porn0.org

As you can see they loose a few visitors on the typo, but i think they're still making good money !

I'm telling you this example, but i really think that investing money and time in such a crappy name is still a bad investment!

    Re: Why register a ZERO?

they make nice banners STOP.com also for paid links it is much more appealing
in my earlier days i had f0rsaleby0wner.com petsh0p.com but on paid links if generic word you would probably get more clecks for lower add dollars

83O.com - at first glance, looks familiar to me. After a check, that's my domain. :-D
