On a serious note though, I think .eu is the 1st real domain after the .com .net and .org domains, .info are not in the same league.

I think that is totally accurate. Despite all of the talk about the internet bust, the net continues to grow at phenomenal double digit rates and this will continue for a long time. A lot of people forget that there were once over 100 automakers in the US. Now there are only 3. Shaeouts occur in every boom industry, but the survivors wind up as huge winners. Shak has positioned himself to take advantage of the tremendous growth that lies ahead.

If you are NOT positioning yourself right now for future events to happen...you will miss this speeding train.

One thing about the internet in these early days is that there are no hard fast rules quite yet. In the 90's you didn't need a business plan to get seed money from VC's to launch a site. In just a few short years look what has happened. You need to be flexible. If you fix a position, and can't adjust for deviation, you will again be passed by.

What might work today on the internet will be a thing of the past tomorrow. That is a given. The virtual business world by definition is an evolving space, much different then the physical business world. Having said that there are a few "constants". One of them is to get the "best of the best" domains you can. Buying "WinWinCasinos.com" just to get that "casino" word is a waste of time. The 2nd constant is "a fast nickel beats a slow dime". I love that last line! It's so true though.

What are you basing this claim on, Andrew? They're excellent domain names, but £1m each in the UK - I'd love to see it!

As I said previously, in the experience of myself and others I have discussed this with, if people in the UK are going to spend out serious money on a domain name (define 'serious' and you'll be here all day, though!) then they're most likely going to want the .com.

.com has serious prestige - i.e. you've 'made it' if you've got one, almost! Many large UK companies will be doing business overseas, hence the fact that they are larger than those that don't, and so most automatically want to brand around .com.

There is definitely a market for high quality .uk domain names. However once you are talking mid-low range names, sometimes you cannot give them away. There is a definite communication block involing many business people in the UK and domain names. I don't find this with US business people, on the most part.

I find that UK clients like to try and buy the matching set of .com and .co.uk for their chosen domain name

When I buy .com's I always look to see if there is a desirable matching .co.uk and vice versa

I have sold to a number of business' who ONLY wanted a .co.uk domain name.

They were NOT interested in .com or .net and to be hones I cant blame them.

If you are an ecommerce outfit in the UK, then a .co.uk domain is absolutely essential in my opinion, beats the .com in this scenario.

A friend of mine managed to get the .co.uk versions of some highprofile companies who use .com

It was amazing to see that .co.uk actually got MORE traffic than UK visitors to the .com purely because a large % of UK population expect a site specific to them at ????.co.uk

Hard to predict what will happen with .eu, since for businesses that mainly just deal in one country, as most do, it seems something of an overkill.

If .info had been introduced along with .net and .com, and .org came along afterwards, I fancy you would be saying it was .org that wasn't in the same league.

Depends on the business. If you're going to be trading internationally, then .com is likely to be more coverted. If you're going to be conducting trading mainly throughout the UK then .co.uk isn't so bad after all. Forget .net though.

Interesting thread. I'm in the UK and I don't even have a.co.uk registrar, but domains are really a sideline for me. I feel that .co.uk indicates a small company that does not plan on international trade. All the plumbers, sandwich bars and shops have .co.uks. It's also true that a lot of surfers go for a co.uk if they want a british business and they are doing a type-in. A lot of this is because the .coms weren't available. I've got a few .coms for large businesses that are running om .co.uks and I'm not sure what I'll do with those. I'll probably put a porn site on one, because it's a suitable name.

Another thought - what will happen to .co.uk if the treasonous politicians give the country to europe.

Interesting. From Stateside I always regarded .co.uk as a stronger extension that that (look quite natural with UK based companies - even those selling worldwide). Good to hear the perspective from there.
