What happens when these new tlds are released is they become the new get rich quick ostrich/emu raisers type fad.

The early birds can do pretty good. Soon people figure out there is really no value. Make your money while you can before all the suckers disappear.

IMHO your past experience with new TLDs may not apply in this case

China ... that had a change of government 2 weeks ago and then promptly deregulated the 4 .cn domains on St Patricks Day

Would you recommend that I not register m7.cn and m9.cn ?

I think it's important to understand a few thing's about China. They are not infactuated with having "just the right domain" like we are.

Case in point: I tried to sell a dot com name to a gentleman from Hong Kong a few years back. He happened to own the .net version of the name. He ran a relatively large sized web company at the time. Needless to say he wrote back and said "no thanks". I offered the name which was only 6 characters long to him for $2500. He thought it was too much money. In US dollars that was a drop in the bucket I thought, especially back in 2000.

Another thing. THe chinese like to surf the internet for INFO. Using credit cards to buy things is, well... Not very big right now. Yes there are a LOT that do... but I don't think there will be a stampede out their to build .cn names to market to these people. IF they do, the names better be TOP TIER. I think you'd have to agree most people buying these .cn names right now are buying "average" names at exorbitant prices I might add.

My theory as to why the registration costs of .cn names are high right now is that registrars feel the time to make some money is right now---not later. I would HIGHLY recommend to all .cn buyers of average .cn names take this into consideration.

P.S I didn't even mention the "language" issue, but obviously one must recognize the fact that "OK .cn names" are not even worth the reg fee as Dr Who so succinctly put it.

    Fascinating stuff.

Not quite sure if everyone agrees with dr who, in that halfprice.cn is worth nothing? I know someone who thinks it is worth reg fee..The registrar

Do people anywhere really care what the extension is, if they are scanning a search result list?

What percentage of net users would know that .cn is China?

How many English speaking, China born, people live outside China?

    Very well said izopod.
    Couldn't agree more.
Most if not all .cn's are worth $0-reg fee at present.

In the end, I'm not sure this matters...

We have a hard time as it is trying to let the world know about, dot .biz and info, let alone a new ccTLD like .CN.

I think it's important to understand that any new of these "new" ccTLD's are a gamble. TO treat them like a "for sure" thing is ludicrious. That's just good ole fashion "hype". Such as "BlahBlah.cn" is worth 10k right now. note: I understand a name is worth whatever is actually paid for the name, but you must be able to make a distinction between a "speculative" buy and a "reasoned" one.

Registars have come up with different themes sell these names.

LET'S take a look at this in detail:

Marketing is a little understood device that is extremely powerful. The selling point of dot US has been about our patrioism (which is not a bad sell at the moment) and our large internet population. For .CN it's the large population. With .EU it will be unified countries wanting to identify with each other.

To gamble on these names right now one must strip off the "veneer" and get down to the "real wood".

For .US--it's not "really" about "US identity" afterall (my opinion on this has changed some what--I don't see it as "US brand thing" anymore). I think people will buy the dot US name because (point blank) nothing else is available in the name they want, or they "Really like the name" that is already reg'd--and may see it being "cheaper" in price then the dot com version. Since we are domainers, you then have to ask yourself, how much will someone pay for the .US domain already reg'd? The answer: Whatever someone will pay at the moment. It's anyone's guess.

All in all I think dot .US is a good investment for the simple fact our name-space is drying up over here. We do like and use English names---oh, and we do have a large internet population.

In the end it will come down to whether or not people actively use the name. The dot kids.us issue is a not a good reason to buy the name IMHO, just for that fact. We already have (third.level.us names out there).

For .CN---My feeling is you should go after the top tier names that the Chinese will use. Again, they don't see names like we do. I bet they use Search Engines almost exclusively. They are very wise people. To the population as a whole what is the difference in the TLD ending if you can click on the link and get to the same site? Obviously this could change, as "Domain Names" as a "marketing tool" becomes more popular over there. Right now---you couldn't say "Blahblah.cn" will be a hit, just because of the name.

note: Microsoft RealNames was used quite extensively until it was unplugged, as the Chinese could use their own characters to get to "blahblah.com.cn" sites. From what I understand this understandably angered the Chinese. My thinking is the money in the HUGE Chinese market will be to "create" another Realnames for this population---that's where the gold is. Again, take a look at what's being "sold here" and "what you are getting"----Marketing, marketing, marketing---(izopod, 2003)

For .EU---Get generic, non-country-specific, type names. It's in the german hands as I see it. If they dump .de for .eu, then if you buy .eu in great numbers your investment will pay off. However once again, much like the .US situation, it comes down to a "what's available" type thing. With .biz, and other names likely to come out, I would short this domain if you get one.

    Hope that helps!!!

DISCLAIMER: I'm a big .biz fan!! but hopefully logic in all our "buying spree's" will prevail!!
