been waiting for this one to drop and it finally did today...
I've always envisioned a site where you could upload a Picture and then search the internet for matching pictures. For example, say you have a pic of two cows in a pasture...you upload it and do a search...the search comes back to an art history site and it is identified as an oil painting by Landsear.
Or, you have a picture of a nice blonde you came across on the net but there's no info about her...upload her pic to IDpics.com and 20 sites come back; her myspace page, other sites she's posted that picture on, etc....
Anyone like this idea ??? Do-able ???

I wouldn't say it's impossible to do your idea, but very unlikely to do at a low cost. To compare 2 pictures, you would need to do it pixel by pixel-- not by size since some pictures can be 20K each but yet not match. Let's say picture "A" was a cow 256x256 you have to compare picture "A" against your database of BILLIONS, no TRILLIONS but probably GAZILLIONS of pictures to match 65536 pixels with color to let's say a 95%+ match and display the results. Let's even go further to say, what if someone resized your picture "A" to 128x128 pixels? Could you match picture “A” and “B”? It’s the same picture, but just a different size. What if they rotate it at 90 degree angle? Sure, it's doable, but definitely not on shared Hosting or even one server-- think of your own personal rack space working together. This is a huge operation IMO. Something along the lines of Copyscape works because it compares text which is a much easier comparison algorithm.
A simpler idea, just funny id pictures from school ID's to licenses, people would still come.
As for the value of the name itself, XX to low XXX reseller and if you can find that one company who is willing to take the venture in your idea, possibly XXXX-- if they already don't want to pick a more brandable name for their service.
Good luck with this one!
Agree with amplify for now, but smarter algorithms could do it in future, humans can do it and I don't think we're processing gigabytes every time we see a face.
