That is certainly not true for a large number of blacks, we visited The Gambia a year ago and toured the village where it is said Kunte Kinte lived and met his "alleged" relatives. Visiting the island where slaves were imprisoned was quite an experience and finding a small clay bead from a slaves necklace on the foreshore brought all sorts of images to mind.Originally posted by woohoo

You would be amazed how many African American and other blacks were in our party on the tour - all anxious to see the location for the Alex Haley novel. Every year there is a "Roots Festival" in The Gambia and many blacks from all over visit. Slavery issues are very topical with many blacks and the Alex Haley/"Roots"/Kunte Kinte connection is more topical than most.
Good name with deep rooted meaning.
