    LongIsland.info

What do you think LongIsland.info is worth?

    From Wikipedia:
Long Island is an island in New York, USA. It has an area of 1,377 square miles (3567 km²) and a population of 7.536 million, making it the largest island in the 48 contiguous U.S. states and the most populated in any U.S. state or territory. It is the 17th most populous island in the world, ahead of Ireland, Jamaica and the Japanese island of Hokkaidō. Its population density is 5470 people per square mile (2110 per km²). True to its name, the island is much longer than it is wide, jutting out some 118 miles (190 km) from New York Harbor, with only from 12 to 20 miles (32 km) between the southern Atlantic coast and Long Island Sound. The Native American name for Long Island is Paumanok, meaning "The Island that Pays Tribute" -- more warlike tribes in the surrounding areas forced the relatively peaceful Long Islanders to give tributes and payment to avoid attacks.

The western-most end of Long Island contains the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn (Kings County) and Queens (Queens County), and the central and eastern portions contain Nassau and Suffolk counties. However, colloquial usage of the term "Long Island" or "the Island" refers only to the suburban and rural Nassau and Suffolk counties; the more urban Brooklyn and Queens are not always thought of as being part of Long Island, as they are part of New York City, though geographically they are part of the island.

Long Island is known for its affluence and high quality of life. According to the 2000 Census, Nassau County is the second richest county per capita in New York State (if Manhattan is listed as a County) and the sixth richest in the United States. Suffolk County is known for the many communities located on its beaches, including the world-renowned Hamptons. Also, Suffolk County is known for being the home of the most eastern part of the Island, Montauk Point, home of Montauk Lighthouse.

Long Island is also known for its strong middle class accenting a strong dedication to hard work, suburban homeownership, investment in schools and education and people who are strongly committed to family living and local community events. Many of these are second (or third) generation families who had originally come from Brooklyn and Queens, seeking the space and tranquility of the early suburbs. In particular, a strong Brooklyn orientation remains among many of these families.

Long Island (Nassau-Suffolk) has the second highest property taxes in the United States.

    Chris,
You didn't make an offer... a couple other people made offers - up to $1,000 for this gem.

I see cities sell for mid-high $x,xxx. Long Island is a huge place with tremendous wealth, home to a ton of people, and has plenty of nice vacation opportunities. Additionally, because there are so many communities, people are always looking for information about Long Island. I don't hear many people asking about homes in Great Neck or Mineola, but rather Long Island. The value of a .info is whether people will be seeking information about the subject of the .info. This is why I believe LongIsland.info is a valuable name, and I appreciate all of the appraisals and good wishes.

    Re: LongIsland.info

I never posted in the appraisal as I think I was relatively new to the forum.

But I was laughing as I was reading the appraisals as I was scrolling to the end thinking this was a new thread.

It's funny, if I want to buy it then it's only 1K. If I own it, then it's 5K. If I am selling it, then it's 25k.

The name, even though an info, was clearly close to $10K-$15K and that was still even low ball. The reality is it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

As a site...well, this is busy, busy, busy...my goodness, where's the content!

My suggestion is this. It is almost overkill with the Google ads. No matter what I visit, like bakeries, I am going to always have Google ads on the side bar. I really see no need to place them first in the search results. That's just my opinion but if I am truly wanting to search for something I don't want to have to fight my way through the crowd to get to where I am going.

Google search bar at top center, google ads underneath that, google ads on left sidebar. All the adsense makes little sense.

Even Long Island History, as short as it is, is buried under google ads that take up nearly as much space as the history.

Its all opinion and mine will not be in line with many. But we, as domainers and web site owners, have decisions to make regarding content and revenue and sometimes it is not easy finding that balance.

Overall the layout and format is nice but Google, Google, Google...good googlie ooglie...that's a bunch of googleness.

    Re: LongIsland.info

I'm really loooking for opinions on how a developed site on the domain would increase the domains overall value. Although I know what you mean and where you are going with that, I'm not really looking for critiques on design or ad layout...

The purpose of the website is to provide information and to make revenue. Prominently placed ads are necessary to accomplish both evenly, in most cases. I also think development helps the name have substance rather then just being parked.

But I know what you are saying.

    Re: LongIsland.info

Typically the content itself will add value. The better the content, the more appropriate the content, the overall appearance will add value.

If people can use the site with ease and it is visually appealing to make them want to return, then that in itself adds incredible value.

Everything I eluded to earlier has to do with value.

Taking a domain and making a site does not necessarily mean you've hit a gold mine.

But this is a great name, it is currently a so-so site, so perhaps you doubled the value. But it looks too much like a directory (which I know it is) and it looks too much like a google sponsored parked page.

The real value would be to get advertisers to advertise on the site. Straight up pay you to be featured. It is, afterall, Long Island Information! Think in terms of the domain name and extension.

Take a few of those prominent spots, like the Google search box, and rotate ads of local merchants. Don't know where to start? Start by giving some away!

Take a few of your most favorite places...a restaurant, a place to take a date...ones that you are really familiar with and like, and create your own rotating banner ads.

Next thing you know, once the site gains in popularity, you will most likely have merchants contacting you directly. They pay you to advertise on your site.

Then, we're talking real value, name your price, I am making yada, yada, yada a year on this site and if you want to buy it then it will cost seven years of revenue to purchase it...

Is that the kind of value you were wanting to know?
