Please Vote on Name for New Domain Magazine

As most of you know from another thread, I am planning on doing a new e-zine about the domain name business and the personalities in it. I have registered a few possibilities myself and asked you to suggest others which you have been very generous in doing.

"Domain" is such a heavily registered word that there were no perfect options available to register. All of these have minuses, but I liked them best from those I had to choose from (since this is unlikely to be a money-making venture for a long time, if ever, I am not interested in buying a name - only using one I have registered or that is available for registration).

I would like your help in completing my "market research" by casting your vote in this poll. Feel free to post a "write-in" candidate in this thread if you think you have something better (I won't use mis-spelled words, 3-word names, etc).

Several people asked my to consider one of the new extensions - particularly .info, rather than automatically going with a .com. Since my preffered name for the site would be Domain Magazine , I am listing that choice in all of the non .com extensions, so if extension is most important to you, you have a choice I could also live with. (.us is not included only because this site will be aimed at a worldwide audience)

DomainMagazine.com is already registered, so if I stay in .com I will go with the of these choices:

DotBeat.com - Domain News from Both Sides of the Dot (meaning left to right - root words and extensions, and front to back- the whole name and the person behind it). I normally dislike Dot in domain names, but I did like this one. Reporters cover a beat and my beat would be domains in all of the different dots - .com .net .info etc. Good column feature possibilites too - like "The Cop on the .Beat" which could be a column by a writer covering domain theft for instance.

This is the shortest and most memorable of all of the choices. All start out with $0 value so as long as one has to be branded I think this would be the easiest. Some feel the DotBeat name would confuse people who hear it verbally and think a . would go in front of the Beat. You decide.

DomainGazette.com - Gazette literally means newspaper. Nice clean professional sounding name but maybe a little old fashioned and it comes from the newspaper world rather than magazines (my site will be more like a mag with lots of graphics, color pics, interviews and features, etc). Still those who dislike the modern DotBeat name might prefer this traditionalist approach.

DomainLetter.com - This name views the site as an online newsletter - The Domain Letter. Again the content would be richer than what you normally associate with a newsletter so the name may be a little lightweight for the job. Still you could do a newsletter subscription list from the site and it would tie in well.

DNJournal.com - Last but not necessarily least, one from the suggestion box. Fairly short and the using of initials might not be ideal but DN is becoming pretty widely excepted for Domain Name. Journal again comes from the newspaper world but also has some use in magazines. One to consider.

I may not use the top vote-getter, especially if it is a close vote, but it will definitely help me select the name to go with.

Sorry this ballot is probably longer than the one you ran into on election day! Thanks for wading through it and casting your vote!

Definitely stick with .com (in my opinion. If your site is about domain names...stick with the king of domains)

So to me, its a toss-up between .....

    dnjournal.com

    and

    domaingazette.com

I'll vote when I decide between these two

Will this thing be primarily a commercial enterprise (in which case .com makes the most sense), or a noncommercial project (where .org is logical), or do you want it to be thought of primarily as an information resource (and thus .info is the sensible TLD)?

I HOPE it won't be non-commercial! However I am also realistic. It may never make a lot of money. However if I can generate enough traffic I think we can sell a few ads. It will also be useful to run ads for my own enterprises on this site. It is definitely meant to be commercial just like any other magazine.

So .org is not a good choice in my opinion, but I put a choice up there for everyone. In my mind .info can be a commercial site too though. You have to put up good enough content to draw traffic that you can then hopefully monetize. I don't have time to put up a lot of resource sites that pay no bills. Of the 7 .infos I own I expect them all to generate profits one day.

...And I've gone and created a site about domains that's not only in a non-dot-com domain, but it's a subdomain!

Its address is there to make a point about the logical use of domain name structure.

I think much better use of domain name structure is coming Dan. With the new extensions it is possible to get things sorted out in a much better way. I like what you did with your site, but I will not be doing anything at all like that.

    Hi Duke,

Somehow "Domain Magazine" seems a bit formal and sterile to me... just my gut response.

    DNJournal is shorter and catchier.

Generally, I think .INFO goes better with generic words and brandables go better with .COM... so I guess I would go with DNJournal.com among the choices you have here.

    Just my two cents.

or you could go with "Duke's Domain Daily"

or the "The Registration Rag" !

or "The Duke of Urls" :swg:

    Best wishes!

It was me. Darn you guys! You forced me to go out and reg still ANOTHER one to make sure I would have all of the leading candidates in the voting. However, I am drawing the line at DukeofURLs.com. If someone gets that - so be it!

The early results are interesting, but the polls will be open for 48 hours so I don't want to influence voters on the other side of the International dateline by announcing the results of the CBS exit polls. Besides, don't forget this election is being conducted from Florida - so absolutely anything could happen (I just hope the Supreme Court doesn't get involved in this thing!)

Sounds pretty cool - like a West Texas nickname, Billy Bob or Don Joe (what do I mean OR - in Texas it would be Billy Bob Don Joe for one guy wouldn't it?)

If DNJ wins, I will have to get out the hacksaw and go to work on my NDJ.org. Would be a nice redirect abbreviation if I could get those first two letters switched around.
